An independent Member of Federal Parliament is calling for a new state that would join the Northern Territory with the Pilbara and Kimberley regions of Western Australia. The Member for the Queensland seat of Kennedy, Bob Katter, says Northern Australia is ignored by politicians in southern capitals and needs to control its own economic destiny. He says the common interests of people living in the tropics would be best served by a new state. "I mean fancy having all of that beautiful Ord area belong to a state that's based in Perth and you've got the Northern Territory a stone's throw up the road. This is ridiculous," he said. Mr Katter says tropical regions share abundant mineral resources and the vast bulk of Australia's annual rainfall run off of 400,000 megalitres. "Northern Australia has over 300,000 of that right? And the other 100,000 is distributed over a huge area," he said. "There's no water outside of Northern Australia. "We've got all the water but we've got no development."
how is he losing it? you make it sound like he owns it or has personal gain from it?
Thats a pretty good idea, would make the state massive though. and just like statehood it'll be swept under the carpet. well lets hope not. maybe something might become of the NT afterall.

WA is gonna have to loose the land, we can't have one state/territory governed by two govt's. Hence no pollie(in WA) would want to give up revenue that he can woo the masses with come next election. So yes they(collective politicians) would have personal gain, along with the many kickbacks and lunches supplied by the mining industry to allow them the rights to dig. Btw who is this 'he' i'm supposed to be referring to?
