Post 2

Ill be wanting a new gaming rig for this since im still on an Old Northwood P4 3Ghz :P

Post 3

damn rip.. so is that thing steam powered? or is steam too new? ;P

Post 4

I'll be pre-ordering it. This is one of 2 games that I'm really looking forward to this year. The other is TF2.

Post 5

looks good. does anyone know how the doom engine handles wide open spaces? have the developers said anything about it (in multiplayer)

Post 6

They will be using a a thing called MegaTexture & Q&A with John Carmack on MegaTexture that should be able to give the doom3 engine the necessary capability to handle huge open areas.

Edit: A bit old article from shacknews about the megatexture and its ability to display huge areas with no "fog of war" and only use very small amounts of memory.

Quote:
The really amazing thing about the MegaTexture technology is that only around ten megabytes of video memory and twenty megabytes of system memory are used to display it. What?s more, we ?brute force render? the terrain right to the horizon - there?s no artificial fogging hiding the view.

Edit 2: Megatexture Technology Mod

Some of the screen shots looks amazing as you can see all the way to the horizon.

Yes I have a coal and steam system in the back shed powering it :-D

Post 8

Anyone who can (I expect closer to release) find out how the server side handles it would be great, as I am definitely interested in putting up a GU ET:QW server.

Post 9

Will do :).

yea pretty much this dude said!

Post 11

Pre ordered my collectors copy. According to EB Games, quake wars should be out on the 24th of May.

If you pre order get the registration code, and head here http://enemyterritory.com/preorder/ to reserve your game name tag.

Post 12

I was also thinking hmm maybe I won't pre-order, but upon discovery of being able to pre-register my in-game alias too, I'm driving into town to do it right now.

I don't want to miss out on using "rec" (ala BF2/BF2142).

Post 13

Well that was a waste of fuel, energy and time. EB Games Rundle Mall doesn't have the registartion cards yet (or the info cards, or the posters for that matter). Yet they have giant promotional posters and stands advertising the deal.

Post 14

Phew - was going crazy... KNEW I had to get to the mall but couldn't for the life of me remember why. Now I do.

Post 15

Poonda, where did you get yours? Keen to secure my registration card ASAP.

Post 16

I didn't get one, the guy at EB Games said they will call me when they get it in. I will be checking with them every week tho.

PS. I don't think I'll have a problem registering my gametag anyway. Not many poondas around :p.

Post 17

Checked with EB games this week and they don't have a ****ing clue. The guy there must have been on drugs, he was going on and on, and was calling me dude this, dude that. I so much wanted to say "dude STFU". The other guy, the sane one, said, they think it might come out at the end of the month, but wasn't sure, so I'll check again next week.

Till next week, peace Dude :p.

Post 18

Thanks for the update... dude! :D

Let me know how you go again next week.

Post 19

june 15 is the ETA on actual release. currently

Post 20

According to the dude in EB games it's May 15. However the berlin wall dudes :p, it's June 15 like paladin said.

Cowabunga dudes ;).

Post 21

i got my date from one of the wholesalers, they've been pretty damn accurate so far

Post 22

Post 23

Hahah. :D

Post 24

EB Games now say June 1st. But their pre-order packs came in today just after lunch. I'm rec, and that's that!

Post 25

Will go and get my pack tomorrow.

Post 26

Yeah got a call today about mine going to pick it up tonight.

Post 27

Better be quick, I have a feeling there's potentially thousands of others who might want "Evil." :)

Post 28

I barely use Evil now, just can't change my name here to the other name. :)

Post 29

"OverDrive" reserved.

All is in readiness.

Next thing - need to organise with Paladin to get two new dualcore Opterons for the GU box to be able to handle the game ;)

Post 30

Wee!

Post 31

"PoonDa" reserved. The dude at EB was pretty good today. Called me dude only once. He was chasing another guy that forgot his card, yelling "Dude you forgot your card".

OD do you accept donations for the dualcore? :)

Post 32

Of course - if it wasn't for donations GU wouldn't exist.

I'll be taking the current donations the nAp guys have given plus seeking any extras (wont need much this time) to upgrade from lower-end dual-core Opteron to 2xhigher end dualcore Opterons (4cores total) - prolly some extra mem too.

So Pala, what would be the cost for those two cpu's I spoke about a few weeks ago plus another 2gig ram?

Post 33

Put me down for $50 then. Just tell me when you need them.

Seems 24 is the sweet spot gaming wise, I'll start there...

Quote:

PlanetQuakeWars.net - How do ranked servers work in Enemy Territory Quake Wars (ETQW)?
Stephen Gaffney: ETQW has two types of server: ?Ranked? and ?Unranked?:A Ranked server is a trusted server with a locked configuration, guaranteed to be playing the most up-to-date pure version of the game, hosted by a trusted provider, which collects detailed player stats and reports them to our persistent database. Players can go to our website and view their stats, see what achievement badges and military rank they?ve earned, compare their stats with those of other players and decide how to focus their efforts in future games. An Unranked server is completely open. It still authenticates ETQW user accounts for the purpose of copyright protection, but doesn't report player stats. Unranked servers can be run by anyone, for free.

PlanetQuakeWars.net - Will a Ranked server only be available for authorized Game Server Providers (GSPs), or is there a way to get a ranked server certificate on your own server?
Stephen Gaffney: We're going to work with a select number of GSPs for the launch of the game. We?re happy to announce they?ll be providing a large number of free, public Ranked servers along with rentable Ranked servers for clans. You will not have to pay to play ETQW, although clans may well choose to pay a GSP for the services they provide. We're limiting Ranked servers to GSPs for a couple of reasons. The first is quality of service. We simply want to make sure that Ranked servers meet a certain quality standard, so that when people go to play on a ranked ETQW server, they can be sure that it's fast, secure, and well-managed. To that end, we're working closely with dozens of GSPs worldwide to ensure that the servers they provide meet our requirements and offer a great experience to our players. The other main advantage of providing Ranked servers via trusted hosts is that you can be more confident that the statistics they collect are accurate and free of exploits. If we allowed any server to report statistics, this would make the system exploitable and ultimately result in players losing confidence in it. With our Ranked servers, we?re doing our best to make sure that all the statistics they report are based on the same set of ground rules. We may eventually increase the number of GSPs that are authorized for Ranked servers, but for the initial game launch we're focusing on select high-quality GSPs to make sure all of our criteria are met. We think players will also be pleased to hear that neither Activision nor id Software nor Splash Damage will receive any revenue from trusted providers for the servers they rent to players. Our only concern here is to guarantee quality of gameplay experience and integrity of the persistent stats. As there are no other costs to pass on, the player will pay only for the costs associated with the hardware provided by the trusted provider.

PlanetQuakeWars.net - Are those servers limited to a special number of Slots?
Stephen Gaffney: Both Ranked and Unranked servers can host up to 32 players. That may not sound like a lot, but it?s important to remember how focused and tense ETQW?s gameplay is. Because of the nature of the objective-based team play in ETQW, you'll have your whole team in direct combat with the entire enemy team, all the time. Everyone in the game is focused on attacking or defending one area, not spread out over the entire map, so the server always feels packed. We've been playtesting and balancing the game for 24 players, which we consider to be the sweet spot, but we?ve also had excellent 6 v 6 matches and are confident ETQW will play well for clans in competition.

PlanetQuakeWars.net - Is it possible to run custom Mods or other custom maps on a Ranked server, or is this limited to official Maps and add-ons?
Stephen Gaffney: We are, at least initially, only allowing Ranked servers to run the most up-to-date pure version of ETQW, playing only official maps. This is to guarantee players? game experience and maintain the integrity of the persistent player stats. If we were to allow any and all community-made maps on Ranked servers, it would be fairly easy to create a map that favored a certain class, which would obviously affect the rate at which a player could earn XP. However the door is not closed: we?re keen that the community create new mods and maps, and we?re looking at ways we can include popular mods and custom maps on Ranked servers. Ranked servers will allow you to set custom map cycles, which allows server admins to create custom campaigns with your favorite maps. Ranked servers are locked to Campaign mode only to keep the player stats consistent. Unranked servers are completely open, and will be able to run any and all mods and custom maps, as well as Stopwatch and Objective game modes.

PlanetQuakeWars.net - In older interview we read that it's not possible to earn better weapons due to playing on a ranked server. Is this still true? What is the advantage for players to play on a RS?
Stephen Gaffney: ETQW?s XP unlocks work very differently to those in some other games. Only the player stats are persistent. All the weapons, items, deployables and vehicles you need to play the game are available right from your first spawn ? you don?t need to earn them, or keep track of what you?ve earned. We have upgrade paths for all classes in the game, so everyone can earn increased tactical abilities, but only over the course of our campaign mode. A campaign generally consists of three maps. Once it?s over, all unlocks and XP gained during that campaign are reset, and the playing field becomes level again. Also, it?s worth bearing in mind that ETQW?s XP unlocks tend to be improvements to stuff you already have, not a whole new weapon or item that you need to perform your class role. We were really conscious that persistent unlocks might present a barrier for new players jumping into ETQW within just a few months of release. If everyone else is running around with fancy new weapons which are more effective than your pea-shooter just because they've been playing the game longer than you, you'll probably think that this is very unfair, and you'd probably not want to play the game much more after that. So because of this, we made the decision very early on not to have persistent weapon unlocks. Ranked servers preserve your player stats and persistent ranks based on your global experience points, but since ETQW doesn?t have any persistently unlocked weapons, you don?t need to play on a Ranked server to get them. The advantage of playing on a Ranked server is that your deeds and achievements are recorded for all to see, and you know you?ll be playing the standard, pure version of the game so you won?t have to download lots of additional files before you can get into the action.

Post 36

Definately worth seeing if we can get in touch to have our server running as a ranked server.

Post 37

Read the article - NOT going to happen. Will happen to two maybe three in AU. They are talking about 20-30 WORLDWIDE.

Post 38

Quote:

A small number of server providers, but a large number of ranked servers, is what I read.

GameArena with 10 ranked servers, as an example.

Post 39

Yes - I'd say small number of GSP's (Pond and Node) will provide a large number of free to play on game servers (ET:QW Node #1, #2, #3, etc).

We still are not a Node or Pond to be able to qualify in the first place.

Post 40

Pretty sucky really. I do foresee that they'll be forced to let smaller providers run ranked servers relatively soon after launch though, as the guys hosting ranked servers will be overwhelmed with users, and unranked servers will be left as only a last alternative for gamers - I'm positive a large majority would prefer to play in ranked servers as opposed to ones that aren't with a game like this (similar multiplayer system to the BF series).

Post 42

Having better unlocks from ranking has no place im FPS games imo.
That shit should be left to the MMO scene.
Pretty disappointed that ETQW has taken that path tbh. There is just somehting about the whole Global ranking system that doesnt sit well with me.

I would personally prefer to play on an unranked server. Then it's for fun and not stat-whoring.

Just my 2c.

Post 43

A copy/paste of my response there for the lovely GU readers...

Quote from rec:
I'd definately prefer to play on ranked servers, and the fact I now can't play no my community's server and get ranked is extremely dissapointing.

If there was no global ranking at all I wouldn't care, but there is, so I do.

Generally speaking, if I there are no slots in Australian ranked servers, I just wouldn't play unless there were people in the GU unranked one. Even then I know many people would place a lesser value on their individual performance, and care less about objectives and doing a good job for the team, as it's a "non ranked server and doesn't matter," which would make it less fun for everyone playing.

Why even introduce a feature such as global statistics if you're going to exclude so many people? Waste of time in my opinion, and more the reason to look forward to future titles where such an issue won't exist (ie; TF2). I'm pretty sure a majority of gamers coming from the Battlefield franchise will feel the same way (and no I'm not a Battlefield player, that's just an observation).

Post 44

Very true rec. I like the ranking system in BF only because it is there. I won't play on unranked servers even if there is no one playing on the ranked ones. However if there were no ranking system at all I wouldn't care and would actually probably play it more than I do. Stats system brings in all sorts of new problems. Idiots who would have not bothered playing in the past cause they are lame now try to find exploits to get there stats up so they can get a new unlock/higher in the rankings. I find that it is no longer the people using cheats that ruin the game, it is the exploiters. Cheats are easy to pick and either kick or make them frustrated cause even though they have a cheat, they have no skill to even use it properly. Exploiters on the other hand will hide in that spot where you can't find their tag and it's a lengthy process to report them. For every exploiter that gets banned, another two will take there place. When a cheat is found and added to punkbuster, everyone using it is banned when they next try to use it.
Sorry rambling, but it's not useful rambling so all's good.

Post 45

This will keep me away from it just like when I stopped playing BF2.... just a few more months till TF2 anyway when we all will concentrate on that.

Post 46

didn't buy BF2142 after what the unlocks did to BF2.

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta First Details

At long last, we are delighted to confirm the impending Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta. The ETQW Closed Beta has been going extremely well and yielding excellent results. We want to give more people the opportunity to give us feedback on the game so we’re going to open a Public Beta with 60,000 slots available. This way we’ll be able to test many more combinations of hardware, RAM, CPU, graphics card, drivers etc. than we’ve been able to ourselves, and also get a better idea of how the game plays for the general gaming public.

The Public Beta build will consist of a single map named “Sewer”, which is part of ETQW’s Pacific Campaign. Set in Japan, the map revolves around a Strogg base hidden in, well, a sewer. It’s an interesting mix of outdoor and indoor, vehicle and infantry combat, deployables and counter-deployables and good old-fashioned FPS combat.

If you’d like to help us finish ETQW, we’d really appreciate your participation. If you want to just play a game for free you may find it a frustrating experience. This Public Beta is not the Demo - it’s not the finished game, but an opportunity to get feedback from a large group of people while testing stability and performance on a wider range of hardware combinations. The Public Beta will also collect some information on your hardware configuration, so you shouldn’t apply unless you’re comfortable with that.

When the Public Beta opens, participants will be sent their unique license code that is required for play. As we don’t have the infrastructure necessary to download tens of thousands of clients, we’ve asked FilePlanet to help us distribute these license codes along with the beta clients.

A fixed number of beta slots are being set aside for Fileplanet subscribers, so if you already have a FilePlanet subscription, you’re in the front of the queue. The rest of the slots will then go to those with free FilePlanet accounts. To be clear: You don’t have to pay anyone anything to participate in the ETQW Public Beta. It’s up to you if you want to pay FilePlanet for use of the improved download services they provide.

We will reveal more details on the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta, including the official start date, in the near future. Hope to see you all online very soon!

ETQW Public Beta Distribution Details and Start Date!

With the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta approaching, we have a few more bits of information about how the whole thing is organized, how you will be able to get your key, and, most importantly, when key distribution will actually start.

First off, I know there's some concern that most of the 60,000 Public Beta slots will go to FilePlanet subscribers - this is not the case. In fact, the keys are split right down the middle, with half going to subscribers and the other half to people with free FilePlanet accounts.

Now, the ETQW Public Beta client will not work without a valid beta key. With that in mind, your next question is undoubtedly "How the *bleep* do I get a key?" Aside from the fact that this is a family-friendly blog and I won't have that kind of language around here, it's pretty straightforward: There will be a special Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta mini-site going up on FilePlanet that will be available throughout the key distribution phase. When you log into this site with your FilePlanet account and keys are available at that time, you'll get your key along with a download link for the beta client.

Let's move on to the actual distribution phase of the beta. As you're reading this, the beta is being released to a very limited number of select FilePlanet subscribers - we're calling this the sneak peek phase. Essentially, we're using this to test the delivery process and to see if there are any last minute showstopper issues. If you are a FilePlanet subscriber, you may get the chance to partake in this.

If the sneak peek goes well and no catastrophic issues crop up, we will move on to the actual key distribution phase. This is going to last several days and on each day we will make available a number of beta slots through the aforementioned ETQW sub-site on FilePlanet. During the first three days of this process, keys will be available to FilePlanet subscribers only. This will be followed by two days of keys for anyone with a free FilePlanet account.

The best part, and I've been waiting five paragraphs to say this, is that Day 1 of key distribution is currently scheduled for the middle of this week. That's right, the first batch of keys for the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta will go out in just a few days! FilePlanet's ETQW sub-site will be going up that same day.

Now why are we spreading these out over several days instead of throwing all 60,000 keys out at once? Simple: We want to make sure that as many people as possible get the chance to obtain a key and we feel that scheduling a predetermined number of keys to go out each day is the best way to do this. We're also going to be gradually ramping up the number of available keys with each passing day, so as time goes on, more keys are passed out per day. This allows us to steadily increase the load on our back-end infrastructure, making sure we can effectively test that.

Of course, a multiplayer beta is useless if there are no servers to play on. Towards that end, we've been working closely with a select number of Game Server Providers to get servers for the Public Beta up in North America, Europe, and Australia. We will continue to work with GSPs around the world to make sure Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars servers can be found in every major territory when the game ships.

One last thing: We will definitely keep you updated throughout the various phases of the Public Beta roll-out, so be sure to check the site regularly to find out the latest. If you have an RSS reader, you can grab our feed right here to stay up to date on all things ETQW.

Thanks rec, you are a champ. Next time I see you I'll buy you a beer :).

Post 61

Signed up and got my key.
Will download it today. I'm such a sucker :p

Post 62

I knew you had taste in games Milenko, I never doubted you, even with the otherwise dubious comment earlier about WoW. ;)

Post 63

Also; come post in the official beta forums.

http://www.forumplanet.com/QuakeWars/index.asp

You me and Dan will be like a few of the first people there. About 6 people have posted so far? The rest no doubt are still downloading from shitty FilePlanet. :D

Post 64

Poonda - How about this Friday? see the nAp forum.

rec - wheres my pre-order? Do I need it for the beta?

Post 65

Nah beta is completely seperate - just need a FilePlanet subscription if you want in immediately (or you can wait for the free/public keys if you feel lucky enough to secure one).

Post 66

Can you just become a member for a month to get the key??

Post 67

You need to become an annual subscriber to get it. I think they were a little shocked to see thousands sign up for 1 month for the BF2142 beta and then just cancel (like Dan & I).

Alternatively, wait a few days for the public keys to be released and try and get in quick.

Post 68

Done, got my key as well. Now to download the client locally.

Post 69

There are torrents already up if that is an option for you poonda.
They might come in faster than the ~45kbs from fileplanet (pending connection speed).

rec - I've always had good taste in games ;)

I'd also post on the beta forums, but it refuses to accept my password :)

Post 70

Still wont allow me to sign into the beta boards, any ideas?
Is it the same password for Fileplanet?

Bah **** it.
Any forum this difficult to sign into isnt worth the time.

Post 71

No, it's the password they e-mailed to you with your subscription. Stupid face!

Also; Dan & I are playing on the GameArena server. Join us when available! :D

Post 72

You should've been emailed the pw

Post 73

i think i remembered why i cancelled my last subscription.
The website confused the shit out of me. How does Gamespy tie into Fileplanet exactly?

I have a valid annual subscription to fileplanet...does that mean I have a Gamespy account? Argh.

Post 74

Ok, I got in.
Even made a new topic.

Post 77

So do you need to be a subscriber to post in the forums... the free fileplanet subscription (like I have) wont work?

Post 78

Yeah you can post in the beta forums, as long as you have the password I think... etqwfpbeta902. ;)

Post 79

I can't download the client, it says you have to pay for an account, but I've already paid. Anyone has it locally?

Post 80

There is a torrent link on thepiratebay... but I dont know if its legit.

Post 81

I tried torrent spy and there were none. I still can't use fileplanet, I paid money now it wants more money.

Post 82

Post 83

Doing it now.

PS. Internode has quake wars servers now 2 :).

Post 84

I've just completed the dl from www.thepiratebay.org no probs

Post 85

SO did you install it?

Post 86

No good without a key - all online verified.

Post 87

Thanks OD, downloading now. I stopped it. It was downloading at 8-9kb. I'm not going to leave my laptop on over night just to download it. I'll wait until it's available in Australia.

Post 88

I am waiting to get a public key (hopefully) so I downloaded it in the meantime.

At first it didn't unzip due to a corrupt CRC in the .exe, however cause I'm using vista I ran it in compatability mode and hey presto... it worked.

Now to hope and pray for a key.

Post 89

Dling now. I shall be in for a game tomorow arvo.

Post 90

So lets get this straight. if I get the fileplanet annual subscription, will I be able to get a key straight away?

Would want to confirm that I would actually get one, before I laid down money for it...

Post 91

If you get an annual subscription, you get a key immediately. If not, you wait for the free public key releases, and cross your fingers.

Dan, Milenko and I have just spend the last 4 hours on the GameArena server. Bloody great fun in a team environment working together. :)

3 Node servers up now, hoping to get online tommorrow mid morning and get them populated.

Post 92

Milenko : Medic from HELL.

Post 93

So whats it like? Vehicles fun to use? Infantry fighting as good as ET?

Post 94

I really can't pin it down to one part of the game... It's just "fun" playing with mates to do stuff. For those that remember - it's like enemy territory, with better guns and vehicles and stuff...

Post 95

Quote from Kawolski;311445:
So whats it like? Vehicles fun to use? Infantry fighting as good as ET?

The vehicles are (at this stage) rather toyish.
They feel like they have no mass and they explode easily (but they look pretty when they do).

But, fortunately, the focus is not on vehicles in ET.
The focus is on infantry and team-work. Can't stress that enough. TEAM WORK TEAM WORK TEAM WORK.

If you're a statwhoring sniper 5miles from battle, this game probably won't be your cup of Tea, caus your frags? They don't count for sh*t unless it's a defensive frag or guard frag.

However the Medic, Soldier and Engineer who are actually working for the teams objective win, they are being rewarded with the most xp. The way it _should_ be in a team game :)

Post 96

Aren't you feeling sick today milenko ;)

Hahaha, I don't think it'd fly with the boss.
But feel free to call in a bomb threat ;)
