Okay folks,

a couple of weeks ago i made the big call and bought a ps3 bundle which came with resistance:fall of man. Me & Consoles + FPS never really hit it off... How does the rest of the world play FPS's on a console... using the ps3 controller gives me the craps!

I wouldn't mind actually playing this game, but i am getting so frustrated with the controls i think i am gonna get mad! :)

So... how do you all you fps consolers do it!? OR if anyone is interested in buying a copy of resistance fall of man (only been used once for about an hr) private msg me! :)

cheers

RossManX is pretty good with the console controller. but i cant keep up with him unless its the one shot kill for R:FoM.

I've heard most PS3 shooters will not allow mouse and keyboards (bluetooth). However the good company of the name splitfish has worked its way around the problem again, which it did for the ps2 aswell.
So I recomend purchasing one of these if your going to play a fair few FPS's on the PS3. They have designed it so it cannot be detected like a mouse and keyboard would.

Oh and if your going to play the story through, play it co-op with a mate. great fun.

UT3 will have native kb/mouse support. I don't plan on playing any console shooter that doesn't.

stop sounding so anti console fps, this ring any bells?

I hated the controls at first as well, but as ya get through the game ya get used to them :0

For starters Gears of War isn't FPS, and secondly I still whinge and complain about how even after dozens of hours of GOW I still didn't like using the controller.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of FPS's on Consoles either.
I usually persist enough to make it playable though.

Managed to beat this in about three days switching between motor storm and R:FoM, insomniac included some pretty decent workarounds for the fact that you can't just rail gun your way through this game like say call of duty because of the analog sticks, mostly its just ducking out from cover and spamming with the bullseye, but you've got guns that shoot through walls and you get the dough gun latter on so setting up ambushes is pretty much required at the end of the game especially when you go up against the bloody MKII bullseye.
Also if you did your first play through at medium when you go for hard you get reapers and flashback grenades. The reapers may look like shit but then you relies each reaper does 1 melee attack each at twice the swing speed of a rifle. Meaning 4 hits in the time it takes to swing 1 rifle butt. If you can get in close nothing can stop you. The room where 8 Grey jacks jump out of the tubes is laughably easy, and a flashback grenade almost ensures a win no matter the odds. Anyway the action only gets better as you plow through the chimera, you should really stick with it. I think most FPSs are made too easy by mouse support seriously ever play halo 1 on the pc with a mouse not much of a challenge, goes for call of duty as well, when you can pick off mg42's at 1k away under full sprint with a kark98 or garand iron sighted its a bit ridiculous.

A mouse makes playing FPS too easy?

I think playing any game should be comfortable experience with good controls that make the game flow, and with that there should also be choice, if you choose to play with a controller or if you choose to play with a mouse should be the users choice. Yes there are plenty of people who thinks that will unbalance the game play with users playing with a mouse violating everything that comes near them, but to me that just says one thing the mouse pwns...

I can't stand playing games that feel clumsy, it should flow and feel half natural. That said give the users the choice. If it feels too easy then your just too good ;) or find better players or play on a harder setting.

Well just in my experience I think that the weapon models in fps titles are very tight with the exception of games like stalker and maybe some Tom Clancy titles there isn't a lot of kickback and the guns seem extraordinarily accurate, making super human shots is pretty routine think of COD titles. 3 Nazis in a pillbox? Just stand up and head shot all three in less than a second with the trusty garand. That mg42 suppressing your squad from 400meters out? One shot from the kark98 fixes that. Counterstrike is pretty bad as well with the rounds in most guns landing on the exact pixel that was in the middle of your cursor, each and every time. I guess it comes down to how you prefer your FPS to feel, tight and clinical, or lose and chaotic.
But in the end by just upping the AI to compensate for your uncanny accuracy you end up with quake 3 AI where you pop your head out and you get lead to the face regardless of range, visibility or enemy facing. Anyway not that I'm having a go at game designers but if you just think of the six axis as partially replicating the degree of difficulty involved in aiming a firearm it's not so bad. Could you imagine those guy's that crawl on the ceiling in R:FoM if you had a mouse, they wouldn't stand a chance it'd be a waste of time even having them in the game, and think of Virtua cop or Time crisis without a G-con those games aren't even worth playing it's just point and click, those games are all about making the shot, through using a flawed (in comparison to a mouse) but fun method of aiming.

The mouse and keyboard is definitely a sharper more efficient way of playing through a game, and I would never use a gamepad to play a FPS on the PC, it's definitely a step back to do so. But console co-op kicks enough ass to merit learning its intricacies, playing on a PC with a mate over the net never quite cuts it compared to actually slumming it on the couch with a mate.
And bring on that splitfish design psyave mentioned, can't wait to get my hands on one.
