Computer Restart Problem

Hi everyone,

I will try and keep this simple. I have had my mobo replaced recently. The last one, as far as I know failed (loud constant screech when power up).

The problem I have now is that when I start my computer, it passes the bios, and I also manage to progress past the mode selection screen (e.g safe, normal mode etc), but as soon as the vista loading symbol appears a blue screen flashes up for a split second (too quick to read) the computer automatically restarts itself and the cycle continues.

The problem persists even in safe mode and fail-safe bios settings. I am thinking maybe my vista OS is screwed or its a power problem. My new mobo has a 8 pin 12V power input and my existing power supply only has 4-pin 12V input (new mobo manual says it can support 4-pin but 8-pin is strongly recommended).

If it's useful in any way my main system components are Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB Geil RAM, 8800GT GPU, 250GB HD.

If anybody can help it would save me from a lot of frikking around.

I had this problem myself. The answer for me was a HDD with bad sectors on it. I'd already tried multiple reinstalls of my XP OS to no avail.

How many watts is your PSU pushing?

Press F8 on boot, when you get the menu select Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure and post the error here.

In the mean time if its bluescreening before it makes it to windows just boot from the vista disc and select the repair option and it should fix it.

i've had the same issue and as Zereaper said mine was also a HDD badsectors...

IMO tho.... uninstall vista... :P

Obvious one, what motherboard you have now and before? Also did you do an OS reinstall when getting the new board?

and there is nothing wrong with Vista..

MB changes without reinstall bad mkay.

chipset changes without reinstalls are bad, not necessarily mobo changes.

definitely different chipsets. need to find my vista oem now. renovations at home are making finding things difficult :P

Yeah different chipsets is your problem. You can go from Intel to Via without a reinstall but any other changes between brands and you need to repair install windows.

FYI

The windows repair did not fix the restarting problem. Neither did the recovery tool. What I did is install another vista installation on a separate partition, grabbed all important data and chucked it into an external hd and finally reformatted the entire hd.

Thats mainly because the vista "repair" shit is made of fail and aids. It needs an option to do a real repair install like XP has.
