Remote server management hardware

OK so here's the problem.

The GU box seems to have issues every 6 months or so :(

What I want is a KVM over IP type solution with preferably virtual media and remote power capabilities.

This one has all bar remote power - KVM Australia -

This too - freedom9 Australia - freeStor, freeView, freeGuard, Network Storage, Data Protection and Backup, Security, KVM and KVM over IP Solutions

This does JUST remote power for about $400 - IBOOT - Dataprobe Iboot Remote Control Reboot Web Network Power Switch unit

Don't care what format it is in, with cost being the only real issue. Need control from the BIOS level up.

Ideas?

Situation: I remote into the IP-KVM, see a kernel crash error or some other "frozen" situation on the server. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing. How do I reboot it?

This machine has been rebooted but still hasn't come back though, so it this case (and the last case) it wont help I don't think.

coupled with an ip kvm it should, provided its fast enough you could at least watch the boot process to see whats happening, and where it's hanging. obviously in the case of hardware failure it's not going to do much but if it's just hanging wating for user input for whatever reason, it'll be a go.

Ah - so your talking about using this for the power management side - ok np.

yeah the point of that card is simply to reboot the machine if it hangs. not sure how it would if it wasn't initialised however :)

I am wishing I had this too. A server I run today decided that after a few weeks of behaving, it wanted to play dead again.

Next time I will bite the bullet and just buy a Sun rackmount. They sell AMD-based 1us with a full service processor for about "500. Right now I wish to christ I had one.

I'm used to having this kind of thing - iLO (Integrated Lights-Out) 2 Standard for HP ProLiant servers - overview and features

Unfortunately, with the GU box we went all out on CPU rather than these kind of niceties :)

Was going to mention an ILO card, looks like you found it.

They will work on any HP server perfectly but they can also work on other servers, you will just have to do a bit of research. Basically there is a little cable running from the ILO card to the MB that simulates a power button press. So if your unit has hung you can simulate a 5 second power press to force reboot. So you will need to check if your MB has a header to support this. However all other functionality should work even if you can't connect the cable(so no power option)and you can even remotely mount floppies and cdroms from your pc at home.

Maybe worth a check to see if it's compatible.
