Interesting... Like the fact that its pointless going to 64bit to get the extra .5 or whatever ram out of 4gig as you lose it with the increased size of a 64bit OS. Basically, only way I'll go 64bit is 8gig an up :) There - just justified getting 8gig ram :)

I'd love to go the eight gigabyte path, but the kits that are coming on the market aren't really easily available, or are still being priced out too far here in Australia. Now that Crucial have switched to their higher density chip on their Ballistic series, we might see some reasonable prices come up for performance RAM.

If memory serves, you can't run a dual monitor set up on an SLI configuration.

pretty much the only reason I don't have one, as I love to have crazy crazy desktop space.

sorry, my comment was directed at papadom. you can't run dual monitors & sli - you need to disable sli to use two monitors.

the single card will do two monitors fine :)

DDR2... 2x2gb kits... They're out there, but until recently (and even somewhat now) they're still limitted in one way or another (ie, speed wise, and reliability in performance from an overclocking perspective). While 8 Gig kits are available, for me, I'm hanging out until the 8500 rating can be hit reliably at Cas 55515 ratings.

interesting. most other things is always quality before quantity, but then again what would i know about ram :P i used to like RD Ram. so i pretty much struck out right there.

note i didnt say quality, i said quantity vs. speed. low quality ram is too hit and miss as to whether it will actually be error free or not. if you multitask much, you will notice the difference between 2, 4, 8 GB of ram more than you'll notice the difference in ram latency.

It depends what you're doing with it. I fold, which responds better to lower latency then to quantity. On the other hand, pretty much for personal use (ie if you don't care about folding) then quantity is usually much better.

yeah i realise you didnt say quality, but usually the higher the quality, the higher the speed. im not about to go and buy generic ram....again.. :P

Otherwise put: the difference between 800 and 1066 RAM is as nought compared to the difference between any RAM and going to the harddrive for swap.

Of course it doesn't help that Windows is tuned to be swap happy, but more RAM can never hurt.

Just from personal experience in floating point and latency viewpoint... 800-4-4-4-12 vs 1066-5-5-5-15, the later comes out on top by a fraction. (this also was proven at a DGA last year where it resuled in a slightly higher score by about 200 points alone, over the 153xx points I got. It's not a huge jump by any means in regards to 3DMark (because that's the points I was talking about sorry), but it is a difference.

My point is this, low latency is not for everybody, and while it's nice for everybody, it's not always necessary. When you start to get into graphics (high resolution stuff that requires quite a bit of processing) the difference can be made in the time it takes to process things.
Real world example? I load up lightroom, and apply a set of filters to a group of 16bit DNG's (note that 16 bit refers to the points in each channel, in other words, Red, Green and Blue channels each have 65536 individual representations.) Lets say on average that it takes 30 second per image processing time, assuming you don't hit the memories limit, your latency is the biggest issue. The lower the latency the faster you'll be able to get through it (as in circumstances such as this it seems the memory is a bottleneck).
If you're batch converting it could be the difference in getting something in on time, or having to spend an extra hour on it (very rarely, but you never know).

and then you alt tab to photoshop or bridge or illustrator and the disk crunching when it swaps back into ram negates the speed benefit you got from the higher latencies.

basically if you want to use your computer for more than one thing at once, size > speed. if you want epeen extension, go for speed.

I cant find the 4gig kits of 8500 but to compare:

Now assuming the price scales the same for the 4gig kit, which there is no reason why it shouldnt, then a 4gig kit of 8500 should cost about $445 so about $50 difference.

Thats RRP too, actual price would be a fair bit cheaper.

Ram what a wonderful thing.

I am now fairly confident that my Vista install is chugging because of the lack of it. Only have 2gigs for Vista x64 Ulti.

EVGA | Installation Guides is the only list they give me that is as close to a QVL as i can find.

Looking at G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK sticks or Corsair TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF sticks. The G.Skill sticks are smaller and will fit under my RAM cooler but the twinx ones are the high ones where you have to get the Twinx cooler for them. I like my current cooler as it has bigger and faster fans than the Twinx cooler.

What i am wondering weather they will work with my MOBO or they wont.
