IGN: Grand Theft Auto IV Review

Quote:
Closing Comments
Expectations were so high for Grand Theft Auto IV that one of the biggest surprises is that it’s managed to meet them. That it’s also gone on to confound these is truly a marvel, and the game’s Liberty City is nothing less than one of the greatest videogame worlds yet conceived. With this game, Rockstar has set out to free itself from the excesses of the series past to emphasise the character of its world, and in doing so has created a high watermark in the relationship between narrative and play. It’s no less than the definitive open world game, and by that measure the definitive interactive experience of this generation to date.

No reviews from well-known publishers are yet to rate it less than 100%.

Official Xbox Magazine UK: 100
Utterly stunning in every resepct. [May 2008, p.79]

IGN: 100
I could go on and on about why Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games we've ever seen and why even folks who are easily offended should play it, but that would be pointless. The only thing you need to know is that you have to play this game. Period.

GTA IV is richer, deeper and more involving than its predecessors. By the time the story threads start to tie up, the mission trees shake out, you're totally invested in the characters and their world. I'm actually jealous of everyone about to experience it for the first time. The greatest testament to GTA IV's brilliance is that I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since putting the pad down. [May 2008, p.88]

Now this I thought was an interesting perspective on GTAIV

Post 7

so, 100%, 10/10. the perfect game, there will never be another better? dont think so.

Post 8

So long as it drags people away from wow and changes them into normal people again :D

Post 9

Turning them back into normal people? Oh, you mean the car-hijacking, prostitute-bashing, gun-weilding, foul-mouthed, wannabe-gangstas... :P

Post 10

in the context of the ign review though, their 10/10 doesn't mean absolute perfection. I'm also against the whole meaning that a 10 equals everything in the game works flawlessly; theres just no such thing.

Reviews have to be taken relative to the current state of gaming. Remember the first time you played Super Mario bros? Or Ultima Underworld? Or Doom? Or Quake? Or Zelda for the N64? I know with the latter example, I tried playing that in 2001. That was three years after it was released and all just see what the fuss was about. To me, it seemed pretty average and wondered eh. But then I had to put my mind back to 1998 and all the games I had played in between that time period. Needless to say, I had missed out on the initial wow factor of the game but could see why it was rated so high back then.

So with GTAIV, Im hoping that these reviews truly make it out to be one of the next quantum leaps in gaming. God knows how much rubbish I've gone through over the years and be disappointed time after time.

Post 12

Is it a 10/10 compared to the other games?

LOL @ cartoon hehe :)

Post 15

Its GTA, I dont see how its going to be any different to any other GTA so far.

Post 16

It's bloody awesome, but there's nothing revolutionary here so far (only a couple hours in mind you).

rec's profile » QIK for videos. Gameplay video about to be recorded.

Post 17

As I progress further into the story I'm finding myself more and more involved and attached. 5 hours straight so far.

I've just unlocked the next part of Liberty City - driving over the long bridges will leave you in awe knowing that it's all really part of the game world, all explorable. Stunning views in this amazing graphics engine. Oh, and the Electro radio station is f*cking fantastic. I'm trying to source the actual tracks to download.

JB Hi-Fi - Games - Grand Theft Auto 4

$84.87 did I read that right?

Apparently BigW has it for $78.

Post 20

I thought BigW was $84.95? Either way, it's bloody cheap. I ended up getting my copy for $91.

Post 21

Although may take up the offer on the trade in 2 ps3 games. Got a few laying around I haven't touched since the first week I bought them.

playasia Has the uncut version for even less, but I'm impatient to wait on delivery once I have it in mind to get something. :p

Post 22

i hope this finally dethrones Ocarina of Time as best reviewed game

Post 23

If it does you KNOW they were paid to say that, Ocarina of Time will always be better than a GTA game.

Post 24

Games ok, I think I just like linear games better :(

Post 25

strongly suggest not treating the subway like some sort of bobsled ride. or do, if you like having the ****ing army chase your shit around the town.

Post 26

My neighbours complained about all the swearing coming from my apartment. :o

Post 27

one of my favourite moments was driving down a freeway, cutting off some random car, and hearing him shout out..... HEY YOU STUPID MALAKA!!!!

Post 28

definately not one for the kiddies.

It's good thus far but you can see where R*'s RAGE engine is at it's limits with the draw depth not being very far and having the background in that pastel effect.

Post 29

im addicted to GTAIV :|

I cant get over the online playing haha, its great fun.

im sure everyones been drinking in the game and had to drive whats his name home.

MY GOD! its harder when the police chase you.

Post 30

Turning circles seem fairly wide.

Post 31

the handling for the cars do definately vary depending on what vehicle you hop into.

Personally I prefer the Hummer, just incase I have to get away from the cops I don't have to duck and weave out of traffic - I just go over the top.

Post 32

Yeah I try and get the soccer mum tanks where possible, really hate the motorbike missions though.

Oh and I wish **** would wear a seatbelt.

Post 33

steal a bike and you dont put one on lol

Post 34

$74.10 from Big W.. (78.00 - 5% Staff).. oh yeah.

Post 35

Drive up there in a 4x4 and use a high powered rifle to pick people off.
Cops cant get up there and you can get out of their zone really quick.
