whilst i'm not sure they should be choosing clones of jeremy, hammond and james, i reckon they have done ok.

I guess they decided that the dynamic of Hammond, James and Jeremy was the key to success and are trying to emulate it.

not alot of access to european cars...but it could work. if the writers are good.

At the end of the day, ignoring all other aspects like lack of variety in Aus etc, the british version of Top Gear still exists, and it has ACTUAL versions of Hammond/May/Clarkson and thus will always trump the Aussie version.

Luxury cars have needed total resprays because of flying stones, and lesser brands have reported damage from silly stunts created for the SBS TV show, which is unofficially confirmed for a second series in 2009.
Some of the most expensive repair bills involved a Lamborghini, which is believed to have sustained about $25,000 damage during filming, while a group of Holden Astras needed $30,000 to restore them after they were used in a game of "lawn bowls".
"We have no appetite for automotive Jackass," the spokesman for one of the damaged brands said.
"When they revisit series two, they will encounter a lot of shut doors," said another.
"All we will say is that it turned out to be a very expensive test drive," said Holden spokeswoman Kate Lonsdale of the Astra bowls stunt.
The show's producers failed to return the Herald Sun's phone calls.

So they were doing really stupid shit with expensive cars, by the sound of it.
Most of Top Gear UK's "silly" segments are carefully orchestrated and minimise risk. Racing on an in-use track surface is probably the first thing you'd look at, considering how loose the surfaces are on rural Australian roads.
The show is going to wind up a big joke I think. The fact they've tried to clone the UK hosts pretty much summed up its destiny from day dot, it's just lame. How about you get another cast of complimentary personalities aboard to make it truly Australian, instead of a clone?

Episode 3 onwards is pretty good.
I reckon the presenters, minus the lead guy are quite good.

I'll second that. The "lead" presenter is very much the weak link, mind you he knows how to drive fast in and over sand dunes!

lol. Warren Brown should have been lead presenter, was fantastic in 'peaking to paris' as commentator and hes more natural infront of a camera than the other 2. Plus, hes a cartoonist, can't go wrong.

I don't see what everyone is actually complaining about to be honest. I just watched the first episode and it was fine - not any better or worse than the UK episodes.
The Aussie scrawny guy personality (Pizatti) is even more annoying than the UK's scrawny guy personality (Hammond). On the other hand, I actually like the Australian "lead" host (Cox). The UK's lead host (Clarkson) has done nothing but frustrate me. Finally, Warren Brown should just go back to drawing cartoons. He's boring as bat shit and does nothing for the show (so far at least).

i rather liked it aswell, i find pom version better but aussie one gives me a laugh :)

I personally found it just as entertaining overall... but then again I don't rate the UK Top Gear as a spectacular piece of television by any means.
Matter of opinion I guess, based on strength of interest in the automotive industry.

Good news....Charlie Cox quit Top Gear Australia. James Morrison will take over for the confirmed second series.

Cox is one of three hosts that was forced to endure fan criticism levelled at the Australian version of the British show. His hosting and delivery skills were often part of the numerous barbs from viewers unhappy with the local Top Gear.
James Morrison, who appeared as a guest in an episode already, is known as a motoring buff and has previously hosted Behind the Wheel.
SBS executive Matt Campbell said, ?SBS thanks Charlie Cox for helping to launch and bed down Top Gear Australia. I understand the decision Charlie has made and accept his UK commitments wouldn?t allow him to return in 2009. We now look forward to seeing James Morrison on our screens when the series returns in 2009. James brings with him a deep love of cars, a huge personality and a strong sense of fun - a perfect complement to Warren and Steve.?
