I normally have my router in my room and everyone uses the wireless but it's behind a few walls so signal is not the best, I decided to put the router in the lounge and run a network cable under the floor (elevated house) to the loungeroom so I still have a good connection. The network cable I was already using and working is cable 1, and the cable I got off a friend which was alot longer and working for him is cable 2. I installed cable 2 and terminated both ends and plugged in. When I crimped the end for some reason the 8th pin did not go in and when I plugged the cable in it bent one of the copper wires on my motherboard network connection.
I saw the plug had not been crimped properly so I fixed it up and tried the cable, now I get a light on the router (solid) and the computer see's the cables been plugged in but it is unable to obtain a network address. I tried manually setting the IP address to function on the network but it just does not connect. Looking on the router it see's my computer connected with our LAN IP but my computer says it has limited connection and has a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP.
I put back in my original cable but I still had the same problem, I looked in the network connection on my mobo and saw the damage so borrowed a PCI network adapter off a friend. Installed in my computer no problems but I'm still having the same issue. Cable 1 and 2 both look like they work but will not obtain and IP address and manually setting one does not work with either cable. Using cable 1 with laptop works fine not a problem, I tried cable 2 and I get a blinking green light on the router, so maybe not crimped properly but not sure will get more rj45's and try again.
Now I'm really annoyed why cable 1 will not work any more, I've tried resetting the router, system restore on my computer, manually setting the network or DHCP neither one works.
I'm going to try a new network cable tomorrow I just have no more on hand to test, any suggestions why it's being a bitch?
