Do keep in mind that the study is conducted among 800 students, all attending Brigham Young University. And it's probably important that you know that BYU is a private university owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It requires that all students abide by a strict honour code that sits tightly in-line with Mormon values. No extra-marital sex, no drugs, no alcohol, no tobacco... they can't even drink tea or coffee.
So I guess the real question is; is it games causing the destruction of relationships, abuse of drugs and pre-marital sex, or is gaming one of the many outlets used in conjunction with those to escape their otherwise entrapped life at BYU as a Mormon? You be the judge.
I've got low self esteem because I sit in my room all day, without any social contact, playing Warcraft III. I'm highly against alcohol, drugs and smoking and I would never get jaded in to religion.
I dont do drugs or smoke but I do drink. I don't think my drinking really has anything to do with my gaming habits and I dont use gaming as an escape from life. I still go out and do stuff like everyone else and the only difference is instead of spending weeknights parked in front of the TV I spend it playing WoW with my GF and guildmates. If anything I'm MORE social because of my gaming.

I don't drink, you can't shut me up and I love myself. And I'm addicted to coffee...
