Christian Bale loses it on T4 set.

Bales temper has been well documented. This recording of him giving it to a guy who walks past a light when he was shooting a scene is a great example.

not really - Bale was doing what the director should've been doing. an Experienced Director of Photography should NOT be ****ing up like that, especially on a multi-million dollar movie. Kudos to Bale for chewing him out.

Remember some of these actors put an absolute ****-ton of effort into getting into and staying in character - to have a crew member **** a scene up over the most basic mistake would be unforgivable.

I completely agree... It truely upsets me that something like this can make such big 'news', but unfortunately it's a biproduct of the current societies tastes... proof is big brother, and other reality junk.

He's a good actor, and I certainly don't think anything less of him from this in any case... but then I'm one guy, the rest of the world seems to have a different opinion.

As for temper being well documented... I don't think that's the case. He was held for questioning in regards to verbal abuse to his mother and sister once I think, when another sister called the police, but that's it... And considering the circumstances and the devistation in his family over the last few years, it's not unreasonable for his family to be under strain.

He's off the hinges here, that's for sure, but I'd hate to take it too far out of context and pass judgement based only on the snippet.

The set of any serious production is a f*cking hugely high pressure environment, people fail to realise this and think it's all fun and games, but that's just not the case.

I would have blown my lid at him too in that scenario, probably not in that fashion as I don't have a fiery temper... but it would have happened.

I don' think he went over the top by much, I guess much of the fury came from the fact that (as stated in the piece) the same idiot has done it before.

If the guy has done it before AND is the director of photography he deserves to be given the third degree. Its a multi million dollar job and he's wasting thousands of dollars and peoples time making very amateur mistakes. In the same situation I would probably have exploded too.

sounds like he thinks much too highly of himself, an actor is an employee, he isnt the director or the financer of the movie. if he had a problem he should of went to the person in charge - not went off like a guy chewing too many roids.

I think that's another reason he was so spewin'... the fact that the director (the guy in charge I guess) was oblivious to it.

Look, at the end of the day they're all off in their own little worlds... but when it comes to anything artistic it's always hard to hit the nail on the head and tap that creativeness. When you're in the zone and then someone pulls you out of that zone there's always problems and people are likely to get emotional. It's hard to explain unless you're a creative/arty type I guess...

I understand where you're coming from, but it's actually a little different to that. As said, it's an artistic thing.

Remember, that while actors are paid to do the job, they're there usually because the film producers demanded him/her.

Also on a comparitive note. Imagine I'm a wedding photographer, in a sense I'm the director of where the wedding will go. The Bride and Groom are the main cast, and suddenly during an important part of the shoot in say a private building that they'd rented out. In the mean time, the electrician in his stubby shorts and singlet top walk into the background to change an already working light bulb...

Now, as the director I SHOULD have seen this and asked "Why are you doing that now? You're in my shot!"... That's the responsible thing to do... If I didn't say that, you'd expect the bride or groom to say something if they noticed it.

Movies are a collaboration, not just how the director feels, but how the actors act, and how it all comes together. He may have the final say, but at the end of the day, no actor wants to act on a shitty movie.

yelling and screaming like that is still pathetic, stupid and counter productive in itself. warn him, make sure he knows he ****ed up, but screaming obscentities for 5 minutes? come on, they will make a shitload on this movie and i bet mistakes like that happen all the time.

even the dodgy little pilot episode for a show that never happened on the coast which i worked on, was seriously high strung. i think everyone has this image of movie sets that matches the happy-huggy-cuddly stuff you see on DVD extras. If he blew up in one of those situations, then sure, i'd call dickhead too. but T:Salvation is not a romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock - it's a monster budget action flick with a guy who, regardless of his role, throws every fibre of his being into his parts. If he didn't, you wouldn't get the sort of exceptional acting that made American Psycho so great (sure, argue here that he WASNT acting for that movie - i would ;) ). He was the only believable character in Reign of Fire, Machinist was unreal, and the broody arse kicker in Equilibrium was great. And nobody denies that, despite the silly Batman voice, he did a fan-bloody-tastic job in those movies too.

you can't get that intensity without getting right into the character. and you cant get right into the character if some ****wad is ****ing with the ****ing lighting =)

The point is it is still work place abuse you can't even get away with that shit in the defence force any more without congressional hearings. While I've worked on very movie set I worked on TV set and worked on live productions(you only get one take there) both high pressure but it is ****wits explode like that cause more problems on sets than anything and it is only because he is a high profile actor that he gets away with it. I will tell you what you do not get the best performance out of production staff by allianating them.

BTW the Director of Photography is only realy responsable for the cameras on a big set although we will work with closely with the lighting director to make sure enough light is making it into his lenses.

As I already indicated, I don't think it's ok for him to have flown so far off the handle, but there has to be a certain level of understanding.

Picture this... you're an actor, now a very famous actor. Pressure on your performance is more important than ever, and while you're getting paid better than ever before, you can find little time to spend any of it because you're stuck in hotel rooms away from home and trailers on production sets. You're trapped in your own little bubble of self-worth and stress.

Given that you're still relatively new to Hollywood you're not taking a Tom Cruise approach; you're wanting to get into character and deliver every line perfectly. Because you're in this situation, you expect that everyone else involved, also being paid very well for this production, is making just as much of an effort to achieve perfection.

Then, someone with an extremely important role, someone who should know better, makes a b-grade mistake... and then does it again! Both times ruining your focus, and the entire take. To add to your frustration, the person paid to put him in line remains quiet.

Now try and tell me you're not going to be f*cking furious.

Bale should be given a firm slap around the head for his abusive antics, and perhaps even taken to court by the victim in this scenario. Whatever penalty Bale received would not be unfair, but beyond that, the director of photography should be out of a job.

I don't even like Christian Bale, I think he's a blank actor, and a far better choice could have been made for the casting of Batman. He was the weakest link in The Dark Knight, and if it wasn't for Batman needing to be a strange rich man with a heap of issues, it would have felt really awkward.

Abusing someone like that, on a set, in a retail environment, or in an office should never be accepted, and I've already stated that. But there's more than just black & white here.

Yes, my natural instinct is to go "what a psycho, lolz" when I'm presented with out-of-context material that seems outrageously lop-sided... but like most things, there's undoubtedly more to it than face value.

Jamie, have you seen "The Machinist"? If not, watch it, and read some of the interviews with Bale about his preparation.

Any guy who is willing to go to the lengths he went to for that role, is 150% committed to his craft.

I haven't even heard this clip, and don't care about it at all. I like Christian Bale for his movies, not his personality.
