Just got back from Star Trek - awesome movie, really well done. One small thing annoyed me (I'm sure everyone will figure out what I mean when they see it) but aside from that it was fantastic.

we came out of the imax in calgary last night (after seeing wolverine) and there was cameras everywhere and all these hardcore people dressed up in star trek costumes. Was pretty cool.. im not a trekky myself but i was excited :D

Yeah Bones' character was ****en spot on. He was definately my favourite.

I enjoyed it as a movie, but as a Trekkie there's a little that was missing from it, plus there were elements that went against the startrek universe and from the physics estabilished.

Well... he (JJAbrams) did say it was a 'reboot' of the genre...
I don't hate it... just kind of goes against much of the principle of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek.

If you listened to the OLDER spock you would have realised that it was a different timeline. That is why there were major differences.

My problem wasn't in the changed timeline. Sure there'll be issues, and the Chechov incident wasn't something I was refering to.
For starters my major concern was the the Warp effect on the starships, or rather, the lack of it in these movies.
What I refer to is the end in particular with the black hole and the starship being stuck at warp... Which doesn't make sense in either real life, or in the star trek universe. The other issue I had with it were black holes.
In the past, Star Trek when presented with the opportunity to either make it flashy/cool or realistic, often went with the more realistic approach, attempting to make that look as cool as possible (even though it sometimes wasn't).

Again, I can nitpick as much as I want, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy the film. I really did. But I would expect him to make more of an effort in the next one to use a little more realism in relation to what we know scientifically.

they were black holes created by red matter, whatever the hell that is. they're allowed to have bizzareo properties based on that fact alone. obviously these were more rips in the space/time continuum than they were simple singularities.

Rerouting auxillary power through the main deflector for the purposes of generating a reversed tacheon pulse to disable an enemies shields is pretty good too.

even if it was a changed timeline creating an alternate reality, there were many things wrong before the ship arrived and changed history, like the fact everyone was wearing the enterprise insignia even though at the time all ships had different insignia.
i prefer to think of it as a mirror universe type thing and that it never was the same reality at all - seems like a good enough excuse for me...

Watched it. F*cking loved it. Going back to see it early in the coming week. Not only the best Star Trek thing I've ever watched, it's one of the best action sci-fi flicks I've ever watched.
Keeping in mind, while a hardcore sci-fi fan, I'm not a 'Trekkie'. To be completely honest, it has always been so very shit - especially the numerous television series, and especially in recent times... right up until this movie, that is.

I wouldn't consider myself a trekkie but I did enjoy the various TV series.
I've never been a fan of the Trek movies, they always seemed like prolonged tv episode storylines, however this incarnation is just outstanding. I can help but wonder though if they can make more using this cast.

yeh im with rec on this one... its the only star trek movie that ive paid to watch as well.
