WoW was released in November 2004, and has since had two paid for expansion packs. No expansion pack was compulsory and you can still play the Vanilla game. There have also been many free content expansions.

All i was saying initially is i got L4D a month ago.
At 6 months along from initial release, did not expect it to see another game punched out so soon.
However the frypan looks fun

I'm with the dude in the ars technica article OD posted - there is TOO much being added into this new one. Nice to see Gabe didn't like it but let them do what they wanted anyway. Personally i think this is awesome - most non MMO games nowadays seem to be throwaways anyway - play it like buggery for a few months then uninstall. to me it feels like they're just ensuring they have a followup ready for when players make that jump to something else :)

i disagree. also, they're hardly the first to do it - the Battlefield franchise for eg: Vietnam was 2004, BF2 was 2005, and BF 2142 was 2006

And then they made you pay for stupid expansions. What was the term they used for them?
BF2 had Euro Forces and Armoured Forces
BF2142 had Northern Strike
And if you installed them in the wrong order you couldn't play them online.
