I have a question about using an i7 cpu and 4Gig of RAM on a XP 32 bit OS. Any help would be appreciated.
It only shows 3.25Gig of RAM. This was expected with the 32bit system is there anyway to correct this to the maximum 4gig?
I've done some looking around but im a bit confused. Are there more bugs in xp64bit os? Is it free to upgrade? I did a read up and it seemed like MS did the dodge and just addapted there server OS to XP to get it to a 64bit OS so I avoided it and saved my self some money by getting the 32bit OS when i ordered the new pc (custom built).
The main question is should I enable the multiple core processing option in After Effects CS3 or will it not be compatible? My girlfriend does Graphics and Multimedia and her rendering is slow, this seems to be due to large files or something, i'm not to cluey on it all I'm just trying to help her out. I built the PC expecting it to be the bomb hope I've been correct. I can't afford to turn on the option without knowing some more information :) It falls on my balls so to speak lol.
As far as I'm aware, a 32 bit operating system will never be able to use 4gb of RAM, some people have said that they can get XP to see all 4gb or what ever, but I doubt it would actually make use of it..
With XP, yes, MS did adapt Server 2007? or one of them, to be "XP 64bit" which is why there is no SP3 for it, and only SP2.
the i7 CPU is a quad core so yes enable it and by default you CPU should be set to multi as well through bios. Install SP3 for XP and see how you go. If its still slow start slaving for a proper Mutli media setup with the same CPU
Another bit of advice. From my experience Photoshop CS3 (I know you didn't mentioned Photoshop) ran LIKE BALLS on Vista. CS2 was fine and CS4 IS fine... but you might run into trouble.
Also what speed is your Hard Drive? You say the rendering is slow... compared to what?
Just remember that when the full version of Windows 7 is out you cant just upgrade from the RC, you will need to reinstall from scratch.
Edit: Also XP Pro will use 2 cores, but I'm fairly sure it wont use 4 properly. There are some restrictions to core limits in Vista depending on the version but again you'd have to google more because I cant remember off the top of my head. Whether or not these restrictions carry over to Windows 7 I couldn't say.
waz gonna mention that about win7 but wrath beat me to the punch however xp only has problems with multiple physical processors not cores from what I understand and have seen. Windows 7 X64 is still the win tho ^_^ and I normally do a full reinstall at least once a year anyway just to keep everything running smooth and weed out the crap.
Quote from Korny;365456: dont waste your money on vista its SHITE!
I don't know about that. The argument doesn't stick when...
1. XP won't make use of the full power of the system. 2. XP 64 sucks, therefore will cause more problems with little advantage.
So with those two points as a given, and in my experience with Vista 64 (in a creative environment) I can't see how Vista is 'SHITE' with these other options in mind. If I'd upgraded 2 years ago I might have a different opinion, but I only took the jump 4 months ago - and have had very little (if any) trouble. I would NEVER go back to XP. Using it makes me cringe.
Having said all of that, it looks like Windows 7 is being released in October... so maybe just wait!
