Time to upgrade my rig, heres what I'm thinking:
Intel i7-920 Processor
Intel DX58SO Motherboard
Corsair 6GB kit (3X2GB) DDR3 PC-10600 1333MHz DIMM
Western Digital 1.5TB caviar green hdd
Western Digital 150gb velociraptor hdd
Thoughts? Would you change something? Different brands? Why?
Go the Gigabyte X58 range and make sure you get a D0 core i7.

any particular reason for the gigabyte over the intel?
if for no other reason, they have fast warranty turn around.
Yeah the support is why, their repair centre is in Melbourne, very fast turnaround times. Performance wise there isnt really much between the different manufacturers.
With what video card and what operating system? Nice ingredients for a medium games rig though.
I'll stick with my current video card for the mo (8800gts 640mb) and buy one when the next round of decent games is released. At this stage looking at a gtx285.
Think I'll go with Win7 x64.
if u are saving on a spend get 3 gig ddr3 x1 at 1600 mhz
future proofing go with what you currently have
Is there a particular thing that is a show stopper for your choice of the Intel board?
Using current PSU and system housing?
Ive had a range of boards over the years (asus, gigabyte, msi etc) and intel have always been the most reliable. In saying that, there was a mix of AMD processors in there and chipsets for AMD were horrific...
If ya'll recommend gigabyte I might go for the gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R

Just make sure whatever sound drivers you need especially for recording work (im currently using win 7 x64 and my onboard ASUS -5e vm hdmi audio is not recording correctly) and in the online games and lan based games i currently play.
I rekon other than that its a solid decision
Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5TB

Western Digital WD15EADS 1.5TB
WD Black for speed (not sure if they do that cpapacity)
WD Blue for middle road (storage)
WD Green for low power and noise and not so speedy R/W
(thats totally my opionion, id check review sites, seagate seems to be faster)
My understanding is that Seagate have the better performing standard-class drives.
But I'm still a WD loyalist due to the reliability I've experienced.
Exactly the same here Rec. I will only buy WD. Have had Seagates, Maxtors, Quantum, IBM all die on me but not WDs.
I think their higher build quality is more suited to the harsh tropical heat.
