The registrars have been pushing for more TLDs because it increases their potential revenue. Every TLD is another "0/year for tens of thousands of domains. It forces companies to buy their name in more TLDs to prevent squatters and phishers.
Basically it's retarded bullshit and shouldn't be allowed. They should be tightening global rules to be like Australia's.

It just annoys me that I already have to buy .com, .net and .org on top of .com.au if I want to protect my domains from being squatted. Adding more TLDs just multiplies my expenses for no gain whatsoever. None.

Aegis -- problem is that you get squatters and particularly phishers on other TLDs. If I hold the .com and someone scumbag has the .net and .org, you can bet dollars to donuts they'll use them against my interests.

you mean as blatantly obvious link farming sites? or is your site high profile enough to warrant an actual knockoff site going up? (in which case you should be raking in enough cash to be able to buy out most variations of your domain anyway)

So far all I've got on mine was the guy who had the .com tried selling it to me but I just set a calander reminder and grabed it when he didn't renew a couple of months latter.
I agree with el pres we don't need more TLD we better controls on the ones we already have.

For the site I am building, a major problem will be phishers.

render the page content out to flash - google can read flash content now but afaik the phishing scripts are behind :)

**** no. Flash-only sites are the festering puss-filled boils on the hairy crackhole of the internet.
Besides, that's just trying security through obscurity. For the last 12 months I have, quite literally, lied awake at nights sweating about how to secure the whole mechanism from end to end. I still do. Flash is not going to make a lick of difference.

here's something else you can try too - scrapers fly through sites when they read them, add a session variable that checks the time a user loaded their last page, if it was milliseconds difference for several pages in a row, bar them, or present them with a dodgy page. you should be able to find a screen scraper script easily enough to test it with if you dont already have one. you can also have a look at CFFormProtect (CFFormProtect ) - implement some of the robot tests in that which work without using a form.
