Quote: Ecstasy, LSD and cannabis are less dangerous than alcohol and cigarettes, the Government?s chief drug adviser claims today.
Professor David Nutt is calling for a new ?index of harm? to warn the public about the relative dangers of various substances.
He says alcohol should rank fifth, behind only cocaine, heroin, barbiturates and methadone, while tobacco should rank ninth, ahead of cannabis, LSD and Ecstasy.
His comments are likely to prove explosive, given the seniority of his position. Professor Nutt has also courted controversy in the past - by suggesting taking ecstasy was no more dangerous than riding a horse. Risk: Medics treat a drinker at a field tent at London's Liverpool Street Station
But, defending his position, Professor Nutt says: 'I think we have to accept young people like to experiment ? with drugs and other potentially harmful activities ? and what we should be doing in all of this is to protect them from harm at this stage of their lives.
'We therefore have to provide more accurate and credible information. If you think that scaring kids will stop them using, you?re probably wrong.'
Alcohol is worse for you than Ecstasy, says drugs tsar | Mail Online
Ecstasy, LSD, cannabis, alcohol and tobacco... apart from the obvious alcohol is more over indulgedthan other drugs, the first 3 have far more significant neurological implications than alcohol... but hey, each to ****ing there brain at an early age their own way. I choose alcomohol!
fear factor 101 of cannabis... had to study some of its effects for neurology. :P Not saying don't do it, just be more wary... and now a days 90% of cannabis sold is hydroponic which does far more damage than natural grown in a back yard stuff.
Quote from "In The Mix": A massive new study has revealed that ninety eight out of a hundred clubbers admit using drugs ‘at least once in their lives’ with four in five (79%) taking an illegal drug in the last month.
Two thirds of the clubbers, who were quizzed as they went out clubbing in Manchester, also owned up to planning to take drugs that night, with cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine – often together – their favoured intoxicant.
Study chiefs Dr Fiona Measham and Dr Karenza Moore told the Sunday Times that Britain’s club drug culture is both massively important for Britain’s economy and operates with ‘the tacit acceptance of police, politicians and economists’.
“We would like to see a sensible debate about drugs without the shock, horror bit — if only because of the sheer numbers we see involved,” Dr Measham told the Sunday Times. “People have a desire to get intoxicated on a Friday night — the American pharmacologist Ronald Siegel once described intoxication as the fourth strongest irrepressible human desire after food, sleep and sex,” she said.
The overwhelming figures support previous news reports detailing the dominance of cocaine and ketamine on the UK club circuit.
Banning everything would be a very bad idea :P everything will be legal one day
Maybe you should be more explicit in your statement and go talk to all the people who have lost a loved one because of some drunk driver behind the wheel. Yah, do what ever you want, screw the people around you and **** with other people lives because you cannot control your own.
Quote: I know it's not a very popular idea, you don't hear it very often anymore, but it is the truth: I had a great time doing drugs. Sorry. Never murdered anyone, never robbed anyone, never raped anyone, never beat anyone, never lost a job, a car, a house, a wife or kids, laughed my ass off, and went about my day. BILL HICKS

Way to take "do whatever you want" out of context. And talk about narrow minded - drug taking is already a mass undertaking, and yet only an absolute minority ruins their lives, or someone else's. For most people its recreational, and trouble free.
If you ever indulge, do us all a favor, and take some extra. Quite a lot extra.

Yeah, you've totally gone off the reservation with that one. That's not even close to being the intended meaning and you only do your own position harm by taking a stance based on blatantly slender threads like that.
I agree with rec and the article that spawned this thread - that is that science and sociology show a different story about the harmfulness of drugs than what the law would have you believe.
Also, Bill Hicks is the closest thing to a real prophet anyone here will ever have the opportunity to encounter. Seek his works; you'll will be greater for it.

What do you a favor? hhaha, come on now, I'm not the one taking the drugs.

The point is to express another view point than just simple "take the pill, you will be fine its just fun".
What you think is that taking drugs is like breaking any other laws, dangerous to society, if the majority did it choas would insue and people would start to die.
but let me put it in a way that'll help you to understand. The majority already DO drugs. Alcohol and Nicotine and have been staple publicly accepted drugs, alcohol since the dawn of civilisation. drinking effects your state of being. make you stupid. make you unable to walk straight, makes everything alot more fun. Almost exactly the same as illegal drugs. only they are alot more fun.
there are very few reasons why we ban drugs like ecstasy and not alcohol, genuinely dangerous drugs like Ice and Heroine have to be carefully managed, and they are, through things like methadone clinics and awareness.
Believe me mate, the governments of the world have lost the war on drugs. you can get almost anything anywhere, and still lead a normal, long and prosperous life.

you're a dick... why stop at DUI when Rec said do whatever you want. What he really meant was go and shoot up a preeschool before raping your mother and kicking little kittens. As much as he meant drink a fifth of vodka and get dared to drive. Because do whatever you want really means do WHATEVER you want... doen't it?
Just because something's illegal doesn't mean it's immoral
I was always, well its probably best to use the word 'cautious' about drug use. I used to smoke the green and drink, smoke my fair share, but never delved into anything 'harder' than that.
I'm not ashamed to admit that the government dispensed propaganda (and when you actually look at it, it is just that) made me that way. Once I actually took it upon myself to speak to those that had done them in the past; did a bit of reading; considered the risk etc - I actually came to the realisation that it wasn't the life-ending demon that it was made out to be.
I tried it. It opened my eyes a hell of a lot. I look forward to doing it again.
Like Herry said - they are already being taken and non social partakers may be genuinly shocked at the number of people around them that do.
Anyone catch the fear-mongering hyperbole bullshit on A Current Affair tonight? Man it frustrates me... treating the nation like they're ignorant half-wits.
