People, it's been settled, I'm going to host a Lan in the holidays mid this year. It'll more then likely go from 4 days to a week.

Unlike the other Lans around the place, this one will have a maximum of 250 people, and will require a LOT of organisation.

Why am I saying all this? Well, I need some people to help me in this area. I'm looking for probably 4 or 5 other people other then myself.

At the moment the cost of attending the Lan will be about 25 dollars. It's expensive, but these costs will cover rentals for tables, locality, and electricity, also a money prize.

Who would be interested in this Lan, and who would be interested in assisting with the preperation?

PS. Due to the large number of people, including people from other states AND possibly over seas, I will see if I can get lockers for personal items.

Anyway, respond to this message, or icq me with details. ^_^ 47470542.

For a 250 person lan in Darwin, Mid-year seems a bit rushed....

Post 4

I think that 4 months is plenty of time to organise it. If some people are willing to help. I've made nothing official apart from being mid this year really. If I can't get people helping me with it in the next two weeks, then it'll probably end up being a no go. I need people also to help with sponsorship. If we get some good ones, then that'll be good, as the prizes may include the latest graphics cards, or even motherboards and CPU's. ^O^

Another pipe dream.

250 player LAN in Darwin? It would be a *miracle* to get half that many.

Sounds like a good idea tho, a really good LAN with a large attendance would be good...but aim for something a bit more realistic...say 80.

Yeah I'll help out see if i can get a switch or 2 I cant really say for sure but MortaR should lend a hand as well

Tech supports a bitch aint it
ASH TECH will be selling cat5 there if we decide to make an appearance.
I donno if Tech Support will be for free though if it goes for longer then a day but you would have to clarify that with MortaR himself.

80 probably would end up being more likely. Like I said, nothing's really official as yet, but if they want to come, it'll happen. ^_^

Post 13

Cheers guys!

Actually, something I've come across in the last couple of months...

Firstly, there are the main stream lan'ies. US. We have the biggest Lan here in Darwin. There's no doubting it, hell, it's been mentioned in the suburban! ^O^

Anyway, as most of you know, I do a martial art called Aikido. Ironically, a guy who recently started it, Lans as well. BUT, he is in a completely different stream of Lan'ies. He knows about 20 or 30 people who've never been to a DGA or Landed. So, that'd give us at least 50 all up straight off if it's good with everybody to go. Obviously for a Lan this big, there'd have to be more then just two days.

So yeah, guys, I'll get some flyers up and ready and print them off. If you'd like to distribute some, just say, and I'll send you my address, and you can pick some up. ^_^

Schools are a great idea, I'll also go into Gay's R Us tomorrow or the next day and give them some info on it.

I'll also go to some other places too. I'll also send some to my friends in Alice and Adelaide in the event some may make the trip up. ^O^ That'd be sweet!

So anyway, since MortaR and Rent seem to be happy with helping out, I'll be only too happy to accept the offer. I'll discuss it with ya guys later next week for ideas of where it could be held and stuff. ^_^

Also, ZeReaper just said he can get a 2410/100 hub. ^_^ Cool.

Don't go all spazzz yet. The LAN is not yet confirmed. Your gonna have to set up at least 2-3 days prier to the event otherwise its gonna be a waste of time. I know your gonna have to get the network planed out with set ip’s so people can just walk in sit down and plug into power and a network cable and set the assigned ip they are given.
So you might have to go out of your own pocket and get up to 80-150 cables. Cuz you don’t wanna have people walken around plugen them self in and braken something. Also your gonna have to get dif lengths of cat5 to branch out the network and a big enough place to hold at least 150+ and also network set up to hold that amount of people. I'd do what fleshy has done at his LANs have a set time for leeching I don’t think it will make much dif on a 100mb backbone but ya don’t want 50 or so people playing games and 20 leeching because you will see a difference in pings.
Its not a lot of work to do in 4 months but finding a suitable place to hold the LAN will be and the networking part is also gonna be a stress fest.
Your gonna have to have at least 10 servers running games from Q3A DM, DOD, Q3F, TFC and QWTF but they all have a limit to the players that can join. And a server can only hold a certain amount of players suitable to its specs.

But if you can get all this organised and the LAN goes ahead and doesn’t flop like Aphex and some others think it will then its gonna own and will be a grate rival for DGA who TN1 is hoping will “own the NT”.
All I can hope for is some good LANS and some grate filz to leech

I agree with my Blue haired apprentice on this one. Although y dont u use dhcp
and assign different ranges to different areas of the LAN (newbies , hardcore etc) this should seperate it a little.

Pheonix what do you think? (networking that is)

i know it's kinda a stupid idea... but it just poped into my head... HOW bout a 'Lan Bio-hazard' Half life spray... nothing great... just like advertiesing on CS, TFC, DOD and DM servers u know... with a Location and a Link... or something... IT'S JUST AN IDEA... also if u r lookin for sposers don't forget to try the gov and EVERY DAMNED COMPUTER SLAPPIN COMPANY IN THE PHONE BOOK... and mabbe even channel 8 or ABC... like try to get on channel 7 comunity billboard... and maybe abc's Snapshot ... u never know who is gonna say... 'hey other people play CS in darwin...'

also i am sure u will have lots of spare hardwarsish shit but if u need i might b able to bring a p133 for like Dedicated Server or What-eva purposes...

RIGHT BEHIND U...

Wouldn't mind winning myself a brand new 3d card or CPU (seriously doubting it though) hehehe.

I may be able to help with the network design.

I look after a 100 node LAN and also 40 venue WAN with DDN links.

I'm pretty good with TCP/IP and have MCSE and CCNA certs.

If anyone can get managed switches I can help setup VLANs or whatever. Shit I can setup your cisco router with backbone linkup (if you organise a router and link with telstra [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/wink.gif]

Post 20

Here's what I've thought of so far.
By the way, a lot of these idea come from what you guys have said already, so if I don't say it later, Thanks. ^_^ As big Kev says...

"I'm excited!"

Anyway here are the plans:

Registration:
As the Lan may involve other people from other states, and due to the size of it, we'll probably need to get funds in BEFORE hand. There are a few good points about this. Firstly, we have Cash in Hand. People can't just waltz in when ever they feel like it, and we will have information on the people.
When they register, the cash goes straight into a box with the rest which will hopefully cover all the costs. We then send off a small laminated (gotta make it look cool) card with their name, and a pre-assigned IP address. We'll probably stick with the standard config we usually use.
10.1.1.xxx

Each computer will require a card, which will help to keep everything organised a bit. The cards themselves won't be too big, about 1/2 the size of a normal credit card.

Payment:
Just so we all know, we ALL have to pay, there's just no way around it. That means even I pay for it! 25 bucks may be fairly high, but we WILL have some serious costs involved. Remember, even if we only get 80 people, which we may not... we'll get 2000 dollars which will cover room hire, power, possibly food and water for four days.
If we get 80 people, each computer using an average of 150 watts, then the total cost may end up being around 1000 dollars for electricity alone. Add to that prizes, etc. Doesn't leave much left over.

Sponsors:
WE NEED SPONSORS! Why? If we get some donated items (hopefully some RAM, maybe Vid Cards, Sound cards, etc) that means we don't need as much money to get them. If you know someone who'd be willing to sponsor us, PLEASE let us know!

Locations:
As we don't have anything set on where it should be, we will need to know some places that will have the following:

1. POWER!!!
2. WATER!!! (possibly showers too...)
3. Airconditioning.
4. Not cost too much.
5. Be able to hold the people.
6. MUST be able to get ventilation.
- For three hours each day, the room will be aired out.

Personally, I might be able to use one of my Dads workshops. Has industrial power (Not a problem there ^_^) has showers, and very well ventilated. We can even move in temporary airconditioning. The only problem is that they're all being used at the time, unless I can work something out. I doubt it though. ~_~

Left Over Money:
Will go into a new Lanning Expense account for any Lan that needs it.

Post 21

Also dude, i thought i might add this, i know it aint much but if you want i could probably get a 24 port 10Mbit hub, and i'll see if possibly i can get another 10/100, in fact, i'll find out what i can get access too, i might even scam the australian defence force for quite a few servers, though all would be running winnt so dunno how that would go, but im sure they got a few laptops lying round with win98 or so, anyway, i will do what i can and get back to you

Post 25

yeh you just need a bloody big, well powered and airconditioned warehouse.. Now where in the hell are you going to find one of those in Darwin?

-MortaR-

Post 26

DUDE power wont cost that much your not sucking that much juice, not a fucken chance in hell..

Why dont you look around whenellie for a location they have heaps of large air conndishioned sheds with one dunny and one shower. And if you end up renting out a place dont ask about the power cuz all they will do is bumb up the price.
Ask how many cercets power the hole room.
At the uni ROOM 4 were we had the 1 week lan in 2k the room we were in had 2 cercerts and we powered up to 40+ boxes aswell has hubs speakers monitors and fridges. So I dont think your gonna have a big problem there.
But your gonna need to find a place this mounth other wise its not worth it. You might have to book ahead aswell.

It would be good to get the room and get a SET DATE and collect money of people before hand so you dont have to chase up every one just ask em to write their name and nick on some paper put in the $ for the lan and drop it of some ware.

donno it a crapy idea but just tryen to figer shit out so u can just walk in with a big red sticker on you or somethen and just sit the fuck down and set up.

Yeah, I know about Winnellie. I'm looking, I'm sure I can get a good deal on it too, maybe even rent free. ~_~ Please God...

Anyway, I'm still looking, officially I won't be looking until Monday though, Everybody is in a good frame of mind on Monday, and feel fairly refreshed. ^_^

On another note, I've just finished the first promo desktop background, actually, it's at a level where I still need to add more to the picture, but it you're at Anime tonight, I think you guys might like it. ^_^

Post 28

How about Sanderson Gym
Although not airconditioned it is big and powered. There is an airconditioned area behind the stage but its not big enough for 80 plus people

The Sanderson gym might be a good option. From what I've seen and all the years I was there. The airconditions are freezing there when they do work. Standard boys and girls toilets with showers, and 2 cold drink bubblers out in the back(if they still work).

Post 30

I'll look into it. ^_^ Thanks.

On another note, here's the new Promo wall paper for your desktop if you like people. ^_^

This gives me a reason to build that file server - probably an old 486/P75 with a surplus hard-drive.

I'll make it out of salvaged parts and we can use it and perhaps others like it for file transit.

And if you talk to my dad/fleshy (don't know who owns it), you might be able to borrow the large table down-stairs.

Well, I contact the guys helpin' tomorrow night. A bit of a discussion happenning to work some stuff out. IN THE MEAN TIME!... Please consider AS MANY PLACES THAT WILL:
A. Host a Lan (must be able to at least hold 80 people.
B. May wish to sponsor this event.
C. Ask around, see who might be interested but usually doesn't go to Lans.

I'm going into GRU tomorrow to ask if they'd put up a poster that I'm working on for advertisement. I'll also ask a few other places too. ^_^
