lol, this is like watching two guys in a bar argue about scars.

except involving the whole planet.

no it isn't. its like two guys in a bar arguing, one showing off the tat he just got that still needs to heal properly, and then the other scribbling a drawing on a coaster and saying OH YEAH!? WELL IM GONNA GET THIS ONE NEXT YEAR!!111one

Apple might think they invented the mp3 player with the Ipod but is your mp3 player Apple brand?

Mine is iriver.

People will get tablet pcs eventually, just not the Apple one.

yes, thanks for asking. This post is also written on an iPod.

I don't use an mp3 player - I use my phone. Which is Apple branded.

Also; the iPad is absolute rubbish.

Post 9

Fair call. But for its purpose, the iPad is even shitter than the iPhone was. I'm now an Apple user, had anticipated this device, and am still completely underwhelmed.

If they make the same improvements with future models, maybe it'll be a purchase down the track - but right now it's hard to say they've done anything except drop the ball.

My mp3 player is a Ipod. However if my Iriver was still working (it was 5 years old when it died) i would still be using it. RockBox was awesome. The next device to play mp3's and web access sort of tablet device I am looking at getting is an ARCHOS 9

Probably the fact that 90% of what Pala says on these forums is either negative, condescending... or both.

It gets a bit much after a while.

too much cotton wool wrapped around people already, no need to mollycoddle idiots on the internet.

Post 20

No need to mollycoddle, but papercut has a point. There's a difference between simply getting your point across and being rude. Although, it's usually funny, so I'm torn.

As for accurate, we'll see where the iPad stands in 12 months. Because if you're not back in this thread laughing at Wortel, I'll be back laughing at you. ;)

So you tear the cotton wool off them and wrap them in barbed wire? Nice.

I do agree with rec to a point though. It is rather amusing. I'm a bit of a fan of the odd lashing.

But given that this is obviously a community that needs to grow, I think it's counterproductive a lot of the time. You're like the forum bully... lol :P

Back on topic, I can't get past the no multitasking on this thing. It's ridiculous that I can't even have a messaging application open whilst surfing the web (for example). I look forward to seeing the competition. There's no doubt that it looks pretty though. Impressed with the fact it's so lightweight. A higher resolution screen would be nice though. Same negatives as the iPhone I guess...

Post 23

I don't give a rats arse what you think about it, Pala - you're not to be trusted, you own a bloody Apple TV. :)

I'm talking about commercial success and critical acclaim. The same measures we use for most hardware.

Post 24

Quote from rec;377870:

so by that measure you were wrong from the start about the iPhone :)

Post 25

No, the iPhone really was shit when it first came out. Like, being an internet device with 2G speeds. It still sold like hot-cakes but was getting a hugely mixed back of initial reviews because of idiotic design decisions, like that one.

Post 26

It was still by any definition a commercial success, and you can't criticise a device for not doing something it never claimed to do.

Post 27

C'mon... really now. The iPhone is a piece of shit bit of hardware. The touch aspect of the screen is its only saving grace, at least hardware wise.

The content of the app store... now that is impressive. Without that store, the iPhone would be a failure.

Mac laptops on the other hand are quite nicely built and thought out bits of hardware.

The iMacs are nice as well, as long as you don't mind your PC catching on fire now and then... :P

Post 28

the ipad will get jailbreaked im sure then it might be worth a look see

Post 29

Will it be like the iphone and have a second version 6-12 months after release that fixes some of the major shortfalls of the original?
No multitasking on any such device would be a simple deal breaker for me - I may not be the target market however.

... irrelevant to the discussion of whether or not it was a success. apple has never been about selling based on cutting edge hardware.

Post 42

Stop trying to justify their shitty choices about their shitty hardware.

Whether they've 'been about' selling cutting edge hardware or not is what's irrelevant. The point is it's not cutting edge, it's shit, and it has been the main focus of negative reviews.

You're right, that hasn't stopped it being a commercial success, but it did stop it from receiving universal critical acclaim.

Post 43

what can't you do on the phone that the phone claimed to be able to do?

Post 44

No where did Apple say "you can take shitful photos, and e-mail them at a snails pace using dial-up equivalent speed internet connection" when the first iPhone was released. Just like now, they're not telling us "you can't even have more than 1 application open at a time, and while you can play current App Store games, most of them will look terrible."

It's not about what they're claiming it can or can't do. It's about what it actually is. And it's a piece of shit (the iPhone from a hardware perspective, and the iPad in general).

Post 45

shitful photos? its a fucking phone. you take quick snaps with it, if you're using it as your main camera, then you clearly dont give a crap about photography. iirc, the iphone was first marketed and sold exclusively in america, a country that had shitful mobile internet anyway, lack of 3g wasn't a major point at the time when it was.. actually lacking.

if those are deal breakers, then dont get the product. if they're not deal breakers, then they're obviously not a fucking problem, are they?

Post 46

"its a fucking phone" - strange, that's the opposite of what Apple are marketing it as. Preeetty sure the entire idea is that it's meant to be more than just your typical phone.

PS. other "fucking phones" have up to 8mp camera with quality rivaling other hand-helds.

Post 47

good for them? like i said. it its a deal breaker, dont buy it. you bought it, so clearly its not that big an issue is it?

I'm trying to say that something that has shit hardware, has shit hardware (concept?). And that better hardware would be better (sorry to blow your mind here).

Post 51

sorry to blow yours, but i'm just pointing out that despite your claims, it was a success, and that cutting edge hardware is clearly not the only metric that decides these things

Post 52

They're not claims, they're widely acknowledged truths.

And I've already stated and agreed it was a success despite the hardware.

Sure it didn't have some of the same specs, cause they didn't exist back then, but its running win7 fine and does everything I want (like multitasking :P).

Then again I don't use it very much because I replaced it with Motion Computing - Motion C5 mobile clinical assistant

The iPad might sell due to brand power alone, but tablets technologically and capability superior have been around for a long time

Dunno. New one? I'm not picturing using it for a great deal more than web browsing on the couch / bed, ebooks possibly, media centre remote control. The thing I most wish they'd change is the screen resolution.

I'm also mildly excited by the development possibilities - I love the crap out of my iPhone and probably get several hours use out of it, almost all of it wireless, so doing the same thing on a bigger screen with slightly chunkier hardware is going to be neat.

And the argument isn't about not doing things it never claimed to do and more about not doing things that are deemed necessary to perform the task it's being advertised for.

Hate it or not, it's widely used, and Adobe doesn't support the iPhone nor iPad.

What it is being advertised for:

Quote:
The best way to experience the web, email, photos and video. Hands down.

The answer to that is subjective, but speaking for the vast majority, that's completely false. The best way to experience the web would be with multiple applications open at a single time... messenging apps, email client, web browser etc.

Edit: Oh, and to be able to watch flash videos.

Edit 2: Oh, and to be able to view pages at a larger resolution than 1024.

Post 74

Quote from rec;378007:

only one of those things has ANYTHING to do with the web.

and seriously, flash videos? that makes or breaks the internet for you? what the fuck did you do on the internet five years ago?

right this very second, i'm sitting on 25% cpu usage. and it's all flash advertising crap spread across random pages. i will NOT miss that. not at all.

Post 75

Quote from rec;378007:

yes they do.

Adobe Labs - Adobe Flash Professional CS5: Applications for iPhone

apple just doesn't want to allow a flash plugin - the reason likely being twofold: 1) to keep apps exclusive to the appstore and not on random webpages, and 2) its a bloated piece of crap that would be deleterious to the performance of the device

Post 76

I found this to be a significant paragraph - It's not worth it if you have a Smart Phone and a Laptop
If the iPad isn’t a good option as a middle device, it ought to at least be attractive to power users and enthusiasts who already have other devices. Unfortunately, it’s not.

It’s not significantly better at anything than either your iPhone or your MacBook. It can’t be used as your daily workhorse computer on the go, because just like the iPhone’s OS 3.1.2 the iPad’s OS 3.2 doesn’t multitask. And if you already have an iPhone, you can do basic information gathering, mapping, and so on while you’re on the go without spending an additional $29.99 per month for 3G service.

Furthermore, your laptop or netbook very likely has a web cam for video conferencing, and your cell phone probably has a camera (or even video camera) for capturing images. The iPad has neither.

Since the interface is graceful and satisfying, you might want to buy it as an extra device just for the experience, but at between $499 – $829, that’s not practical for most consumers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Anti-Hype

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The iPad isn’t going to be a phenomenon with either netbook users or power users. It’s not better than existing devices at anything, and it’s too expensive for most people to use it as a secondary device. I might have said something different if the rumors that the iPad would be all about a new push in the content marketplace were true, but that didn’t happen. Instead, we got a cool toy.

Paladin, you're arguing semantics. When you ask pretty much anyone, especially those not savvy with technology and terminology, what they do on the "web", they'll give you a list longer than "browse websites". You'll also find they do more than one of those as a single time. Hell, even my Mum uses MSN while browsing. She actually uses the internet mainly to play multiplayer canasta. And guess what, that multiplayer canasta website uses flash for the games.

No one here agrees with you - not even Chad. Virtually no reviews agrees with you. Even surveys regarding interest in the device since launch do not agree with you. And all indicators point to initial sales being slower than expected.

You've turned into a deluded fanboy.

tsk tsk. resorting to ad hominem as well are we. i can't think of a single thing i do on the web that relies on flash. not one. i can't be the only one. i'd almost go as far to say that the web is best experienced WITHOUT flash, simply because of the amount of fucking intrusive flash based advertising on content sites. but still, you're a "web designer" so i guess flash dying would mean a line being deleted from your resume. golly gosh we can't have that can we.

right now, 23 tabs. browser is irrelevant because flash is a cpu hog on all of them. the worst offenders are the online australian newspapers.

Post 89

Flash 9 does not work yet on Android as there is only bits and pieces that actually work in linux let alone a hevaly cut down kernel with a Java front end. Hence the supprisingly adobe has build version 10 and released binaries for iPhone and Android.

Browser is important to how the flash plugin is implemented. And if it is so much of a problem from adds why not block them. There is a handful of ways that a user can go about doing this which are relatively easy to setup.

Nobody is arguing that YOU don't like flash. What we're all saying is that most of the market DOES.

Although is it really Apple's fault that they're not doing flash natively? That was a question, not a statement btw.

Post 92

Quote from grandinferno;378034:

pretty sure it is. adobe already have a flash plugin for safari so it wouldnt be much of a stretch to get it on the phone - but apple control that.

Post 93

Flash is shit. Because it is often implemented poorly and not needed for most of things it is used for.

My biggest problem with flash is that sites use it when there is no need and break when you don't have it available. Pala is right Aussie news sites are big offenders with the improper use of flash. However with the web the way it is lack of even limit flash support is a big black mark against the iPad. So far is doesn't seem to offer much is the way of extra features for what is looking very much like an iPod that won't fit in your pocket.

Post 94

The whole issue with flash on the ipad or iphone is just because Apple and Adobe cannot come to agreement. So its more of a political stance of Apple to force Adobe to bend to their wishes what they want flash to do on their platform. Though the second issue with Flash is its a direct contender with Apples content delivery vehicle. The whole concept is to lock down the software and hardware and offer a tight convienient solution for the consumer. This means only buying Ebooks from the Itunes stores, music, movies. The whole concept of reducing functionality to increase productivility has allways been Apples strong point and it worked very well on the IPhone and or Ipod's.

Although the good news is this will heat up the Tablet market for the next 4 years and bring some cool new toys to play with. I for one don't very much enjoy using Apples product stack or solutions its too limiting in my opinion. Though for most consumers out there its exactly what they want, to be held with one hand and charged along the way with the other.
