So what your saying is that the LAN's will only take place if 80% out of the 100% who sign up are currently in uni?? or in school in general?

For NTU student union funds to be allocated to a club that is afiliated with them, they require an 80:20 ratio of uni students to non uni students as club members. Basically, the tight asses won't give you money unless there is a clear majority of interest from NTU students [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm32.gif]
<--- would like to see the revue society get into the student union, it'd be heaps of fun =)

Alright well I dont think it will be hard to find the 20 but to find the 80 might be more difficult [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]

lol true - the key phrase though is "club members" - Though that may be covered by some sort of contract agreement.. who knows what schemes the evil student union may be up to in these dark times [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm35.gif]

yeah it all sounds real nasty, except the guy who is in charge of all the clubs doesnt really care much [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]
and because we dont ask for anything but free rooms its all good [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]
the problems are gonna start when we ask for a 24 port switch :P
but by the time we need that, we should have enough members for it to be justified. I think if any "non-students" wanted to come, and they failed to sign up for some strange reason.... then we shouldnt have any problems with membership [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]
and we'll just count every time we have a lan as a meeting.
easiest way to deal with the union is to do as little as possible until they decide that it isnt enough [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]
which probly wont happen, cos they are reallyyy slack

Ok we haz talked to the student union, and we now have an official club, LAN rights
We plan on having events every few weeks, we probly arnt going to rival the DGA LANs, but we are going to have a go at it. We plan on having these LANs for free, because at this point we have no costs. and the more members we have, the more funding we can get [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]
so if there are any NTU students around here could you send us an email at
lanrights@hotmail.com
and we can have non-student members, but it has to be a 80% student membership, but i dont think they can stop non-members attending the events [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]
Post 8
seriously, anyone here from NTU, you gotta register with this club, the freakin QOC club is getting more funds than us.
we are gonna run pretty well the same as DGA, but on a smaller scale, hopefully more regularly, and for free dammit!!! free!!!!!
which is very important for struggling uni students

LOL use their apathy against them, you fight good grasshoppah [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm35.gif]
only problem will come when they cotton on to what you're doing

Student members bring in the cash. this is not the same thing as student attendance at the lan (if i understand correctly).
anyway. dont get a 24 port switch, thats overkill. switches aren't all that and a bag of chips, but they do have their applications.
yes i'm a student, yes i'd join. anything else?
Post 12
print out some cheap advertising fliers, and photocopy them a million times or so, then start posting them up all over the uni - quickest way to get people @ uni interested - prolly best to start on the boards in the computer labs and the technology building though :P

Well Done Harbinger,
Organizing a LAN is much harder than most ppl think.
DGA will offer help with equipment swtiches, Tables if needed, for a small fee.
email me.

hey is there any way yoyu can have it for free for students but get non students to pay some sort of fee which goes towards equipment purchases?
i go to uni of sa and we have to same sort of bullshit, what pisses me off is that the union doesnt realise that others coming in adds atmosphere x1000 and also makes more cash for new equipment plus a prize or 2
id happily pay to come along
oh and a place people dont really think of for LANs is the kalimnian brotherhood hall, it is aircon, will hold as many ppl as you want, and has tables and chairs aplenty
it is a bit echoey tho, but you couls pull strings and get it cheap
Post 17
basically we dont care who shows up just as long as most of us are uni students, not gonna charge anyone until the union refused to pay for our air con anymore :P
Post 18
I started out the same way, borrowing hubs and switches, but it was too much to do. Halfway thru the LAN people wanted to go and take their hubs, totally stuffing up the network (at 3 in the morning) the best way is to buy your own, then you have no probs.
I am not looking to make money of you guys. Just to cover the cost of the equipment, then you will have a solid network with no hassles, and everyone will be happy.
All DGA equipment is available to all DGA members; they were the ones who paid for it all. None DGA members will pay a little more.
I believe that’s fair.

i got a 5 port switch that will get me and my 4 uni guys in
Post 20
at some point we are gonna have to implement a fee, but we have to do it on the sly because the freakin union sez that anything we buy becomes theirs, fuck that [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]
anyway we are only running single day lans so there is less hassle with ppl leaving early, and the people who do have hubs are faily stolid :P
... and DGA is there for the two day marathons :P
the union does have a clause for supply of "extraordinary" funding, which covers one off stuff, so we reckon maybe towards the end of year, or start of next year, when the funding resets, we hit em up for a big switch, but they are massively tight
no way am i gonna fork out money to buy equipment, and then let the union take it, i pay the fockers $200 a year for nothing as it is
I think we'll just have nice disorganized lans, and let tn1 do all the hard work on the big ones
[Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm1.gif]
Post 21
You know m8... I think you should not give yerselves second best with all the effort you guys put in to get the LAN together. I recommend you guys contact TN1 (aka Mr. DGA) and you guys help him put up a LAN... that way... the workload in setting up DGA gets reduced cause there will be a lot of helping hands and you guys get a much bigger better well run round of gaming everyone deserves.

Post 22
i reckon charge and get good equipment
Post 23
well i got an 8 port 10/100 swith and a 5 port 10mb hub ill bring em
Post 24
well the lan went pretty good, we only got 15 odd ppl because of some late pullouts, but otherwise the location was really good, the airconditioning was very cold, and considering we didnt actually pay, it was good :P
dunno about helping with dga, we may cause more damage than good, as far as i can see there are three main points in a lan: get a location, get people to go, and get equipment set up
except for setting up equipment, theres not much for us to do [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm1.gif]
also nearly everyone in our group are softcore gamers, hardly anyone is up for a two day lan [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm43.gif]
any time during the holidays, im going to the dga lans, then probly have a little one midway so everyone can leech all my stuff from that
[Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm4.gif]
as for hubs and switches, I dont think there would be any trouble with that until we get more than 25 people or so, we barely had to rearrange the network at all [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm10.gif]
goddam dga had to be two days b4 exams didnt it [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smile.gif]
