Can you run a SATA cable from one motherboard too another motherboard for quicker file transfers ?
Wondering if it comes up as more HDD's on each PC or maybe conflict with PC on start-up, if left connected all the time ?

you can do it with firewire (IEEE 1394) via networking over the cable, but not SATA afaik.
apple used to have a setup where you could plug a powered down macbook into a desktop machine via firewire and it would detect and behave like an external HDD too.
You can also do it with USB 2.0 - mobo to mobo. However I'm not sure if you require a special cable, or if you can use any cable. I know Belkin sell a specific product to do this has some sort of dongle in the middle of the cable.
To answer your question though; no. As far as I'm aware, no, you can't do it SATA-to-SATA.

Hmm - apparently Vista and Windows 7 don't play well with Firewire networking. If you're using Windows 7 though, this should get you going:

EDIT: okay from everything i've been able to find: Microsoft has killed firewire networking on Windows as of Windows Vista.
for USB networking you need 3rd party products http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_over_USB (don't just try plugging a USB cable direct between 2 machines as this might short something out).
have you considered a null modem cable? =) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_modem
or just gigabit ethernet? 25+MB/sec not fast enough for you?
To get the best out of Gigabit Ethernet you need to enable large frames in the TCP/IP stack in Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003, otherwise your not going to see a major improvement over 100 Ethernet.

Yeah you need a "Belkin Transfer Cable" if you're going to do it via USB.

I wouldn't advise users to enable jumbo frames unless you understand exactly what you're doing. If their comms equipment or applications aren't jumbo-packet friendly then its going to cause problems.
I would also think that the difference between 100mbit and 1000mbit could be considered a major improvement...

My experience differs. I saw a major difference between on a gigabit network, comparing it to a 100mbit network, without any tinkering of any kind.
The belking cable is just a pair of usb network cards built into a cable.
