HBO has now announced they're going to run the George R R Martin epic: A Game of Thrones (though the title they've run with has dropped the 'A').

The premium network has picked up the project for a first season debut next spring (below is the first released photo from the series). Nine episodes plus the pilot have been ordered. Production will begin in Belfast this June. From the moment the project was first announced in development, the series based on the George R.R. Martin novels has generated enormous, perhaps unprecedented, online interest for a series at such an early stage. The sprawling tale set in the mythical land of Westeros tells the story of the noble Stark family who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the king's new right-hand man. The four-and-counting books in the series would each be used as one season of the series. Unlike many fantasy novels, the "Thrones" series largely avoids relying on magical elements and instead goes for brutal realism -- think "Sopranos" with swords. Martin, a former TV writer ("Beauty and the Beast"), writes each chapter as a cliffhanger, which should lend itself well to series translation.

I can't wait for this - a series that can finally cleanse the pallet of that vile goat piss called Legend of the Seeker. This one is definitely going to be a show to watch, whether you like fantasy or not.
Too bad the WoT series ends next year, another 2-3 books could have tided me over the next 5-7 years that it'll take for the next GRRM book to come out.

Was a bit disappointed in the idiot viewers who complained about lady being killed, they even knew she would die but thought they should have changed the tv series... ffs I have a feeling this series is going to have same major grievers on its back.. I was like WTF when I read them and thought books don't usually go like this hehe

Started watching this last night (thanks Fleshy), frickin awesome. Love the Cinematography, top notch cast. LOVED the beginning and end of the first show!
I haven't read the books, but I have this feeling that the description matching 'The Mountain' that was given to Ned Stark, was just a sneaky move by Petyr to stir shit up.
Also (Spoiler): how fucking awesome was Viserys' crown! Bout time they killed off that cunt.
I've heard a few complaints around the place that 'The Mountain' wasn't big enough. Think he came off a lot better in the ep (5 I think?) when they took him off the horse and put him next to another human being, seemed far more imposing and gave a much better sense of his height and mass.
yeah, GRRM commented on the mountain - said they couldnt find a suitable actor of the proper size, but that this guy was capable of all the menacing they needed anyway. I'm inclined to agree.

It's getting annoying people constantly expecting the series to be different to the books... On a different note, I'm loving the Tyrion more and more each episode, he is definitely making the show at the moment which is a huge surprise
