Broadband in Lyons Darwin

I have been away from the NT and also Australia for some time, I have completed several Net searches trying to gain some information on Broadband availability in the New Suburb of Lyons.

I found some old references to Telstra Velocity etc, most of the discussion was on here however its all massively out of date and not specific to anyone actually having Broadband.

I don't want a phone line that is active, I would like Naked DSL I am not sure if all homes built there got this Telstra gumf installed.

Does anyone have any insider info, and might seem like a silly question how the hell do I quiz and ISP for possible connection when what I want is Naked therefore I don't have a phone number with which to check the exchange, just had a quick look at iinet and there is no provision for simply entering an address.

Hi HWMB,

Lyons is all FTTH (Fibre To The Home), if you look outside your garage roller door, you will see a gray Telstra box called an ONT (Optical Network Termination) and back to back with that on the inside of the garage will be the power supply for it, so the fibre comes directly from the exchange though a series of splitters to your house and terminates there providing you with Phone, Broadband and TV all on the one cable, so you also have Digital TV without an antenna.

That was just a little heads up if you didn't know already.

Also Try this link ----> Click here

I dont know how accurate but that site allows you to check your exchange for Naked DSL though either a Phone number, Address or Exchange.

Hope this was helpful mate :)

Thanks Mate,

I looked at a development paper on the FTTH in the estate, what I don't get is am I restricted to a provider or do I get my service from anyone who terminates at the exchange which I gather will be CSUF, then it gets piped to the estate I assume?

Anyway I will be up there in the not too distant future I hope its all relatively simple looking at the providers on the CSUF exchange I might be stuck with Bigpond. I assume because its FTTH from the exchange I should get near top ADSL2+ speeds? in the 18Mbit range?

Or are the plans strictly fiber plans from Bigpnd?

Looks like I am restricted to Velocity Plans from Telstra, they seem ok I will just have to be smart with the free content servers to get updates etc.

you are absolutely correct if you dont want telstra you will have to go for the wireless key ala internet anywhere there were a lot of defence member more than a little unhappy about the inability to chooses their ISP

Well was on the phone to get sales, you then get sent to the special sales for velocity, the guy I got was obviously an enthusiast went off about how good 100Mbit was and even if you didn't blah de blah, I deflated that a little when I reminded him I need to virtually pay a second mortgage for the privilege.

Got put through to another section apparently sales were flat out, so I left a message that would be replied to within 24hrs, I am not dyslexic so I am sure I left the right number, no return call.

So far so good all going according to my high expectations of Bigpong.... You know when you have them their actual product is pretty bomb proof, but to get it is a right pain in the butt sometimes.

Posted for the purpose of recording the experience and any searches future forum members might make before moving to Darwin....
