XP Final Build p4 1.3, 512g Rdram 30gb Quantam Fireball 7200, main drive 40gb Western Digital 7200, storage drive
Problem....screwed around a bit too much and decided it was time to format and reinstall. Problems, Problems, Problems. Tried win98 SE/winMe/winXP discs to start system with cdrom support. Succsesful start but unable to dectect c: drive properley due NTFS ???? says not proper fat or fat32. Would not alloy format of C: due no smart drive running ??? Okay tried accessing win xp disc through c:\i386\winnt enters their ok but says please give directory where xp files sit. Does not except where I tell it. I won't go any further because I will start screaming. ANYONE with constructive ideas or HELP

run fdisk to completely sweep the drive, then format to ntfs - it should work then from a boot disk, even a win98 one. I had the same problem with this machine, was running win98, went the upgrade to xp and it fried - still, its been relatively smooth after formatting to ntfs.
just don't forget to completely remove and re-create the logical dos partition.

Crazy - when you fdisk, delete the "other" partition (ie, nonDOS - NTFS), then recreate a primary DOS partition, then reformat (which will give you FAT32). Then, with the **cough** version **cough** of XP that you have, you will have to do a basic install of 98 first, then chuck in the XP CD. Choose to do a full install from there, etc...

Well it talk the better part of a day but success........ Things were just going crazy [sic] nothing seemed to make sense. I was able to fdisk but then had trouble formatting, then when i actually formatted i couldn't get it to boot to the CDROM. One final threat of violence towards the rig and hey presto it worked. My system runs with a: Floppy c: Main Drive d: Storage e: DVD/Cdrom f: CD Burner/Cdrom. And then I remembered that in the past, for some reason, it considers both the DVD and The Burner as CDrom's if and when it requires???? So lets put the Bootable disk in the Burner and away we go. Worked like a dream full install in 38 minutes. So either myself and my two helpful techs who put the second drive in a while back have created a miracle or I just shouldnt touch PC's. Either way the next time i decide to clean install I am sure there will be a simalar fiasco.
