XP and driver conflicts

I have come to the realization that WinXP is very very temperamental. I (accidentally) installed directCD for easy CD creator 5.02 - Not only did it disable my old (non burner) CDRom, but it also made the machine restart instead of shut down when i hit the shutdown button. Now all I have to do is figure out why it keeps reclassifying my modem and loosing the com port its attached to... Guessing that whatever problems others are having with XP is driver related, though exactly what drivers are causing problems I couldn't say.

On another note, XP also no longer uses mscdex or atapi to handle the CD drives - so it also broke my copy of audiocatalyst *sigh* ohh well

Meph, both NyT and I have drivers for xp for Swann 56k modems - they call it a Swannsmart 3 although they are only Swannsmart 2's, but the drivers work although not signed drivers.

My machine also restarts when told to shut down.... any thoughts from anyone on this problem???

Please don't tell me that the fix for this is the uninstall of directcd that OD suggested... I have too many directcd's to lose it. It seems to work in xp although it is a bit slow!!!

btw, Nightcrawler is the better option if you want the drivers transferred by icq or something, as I only have 56k at the mo.

My ICQ 121518068

Unscarred, my Swann modem is an original swannsmart 1 so im not sure that the new drivers would work - and XP has its own version of directCD - you can still use easy CD creator, just remove the directCD component

Yeah, I think I will uninstall directcd. Did that fix your reboot problem?

Lemme know if you want the drivers to try anyway.

Thanks for the ideas.

The only hassle ive had with xp is it crashing at odd times in DOS games (yes i still play the classics, yes i know XP is notsupposed to support DOS games at all blah blah ) and constant crashing of Tribes2
but i think thats just program incompatability

I know I know why your machine keeps on starting after shutdown.

XP when installed is set to default to reboot on shutdown when it crashes. In the properties section of My Computer there is a box that you untick which will stop the rebooting.

When you shut your machine down after unticking the box, it commence shutting down procedure and will give you a blue screen but will not reboot. The error will be on the blue screen as to what is wrong.

Also you will find if you dont have WHL certified drivers for your hardware, it will more than likley be your problem.

uninstalling direct CD fixed both probs, and yeah, i'm willing to try the drivers - if i don't have to reinstall my modem every other day, i'll be a happy man [Image: http://bbs.gamers.octa4.net.au/smilies/cwm32.gif]
