So you can lock down all your pr0n so noone else in your family can access it. Or, you can read this and make some sort of educated decision yourself.

I believe NTFS delivers better performance than FAT32(under NT, 2K or XP)......I think I read that somewhere while I was doing my NT4.0 exams.

Well anyway, if your looking to run a stripe set (which you should) you will need to run NTFS anyway.

NTFS was written with drives bigger tha 2Gb in size in mind. FAT was originally designed for like 20 odd Mb drives.....

Basic rule of thumb -
win98 - FAT32
NT4.0/Win2K/XP - NTFS

One tip is to leave a small primary FAT partition on the disc so that you can boot from the HDD and run recovery Apps....

Anyway...Im drunk and havent slept in over 48 hours......so I'll leave it at that....feel free to correct me if needed

Yeah, okay, here's the first correction, under XP at least the FAT partition for the sake of recovery is hardly necessary, as XP comes with a number of recovery methods. And stripe sets are hardly a common thing in home computing.

Oh yeah. FAT was designed for floppy disks, and hacked onto hard drives.

You will have to partition it into smaller drives....FAT doesnt cope with bigger than 20Gb (I think...well pissed atm)

Run FDISK and it should sort it out...

my 40gig is formated in FAT32 and runs fine, fat is faster ntfs u got more room says so in the xp setup if u read things.
Or at least i think it does

FAT is faster than NTFS because NTFS has the overhead of file system permission lookups. FAT has no concept of file permissions.

Not that you'd notice with current day processors.
