It’s such a hysterical double-standard and proof that when it comes to consumer boycotts people are only actually prepared to impose an arbitrary ban on something they think they can live without.

And that’s the flipside of the issue - why do people think they can’t live without this stuff?

I got an iPod last year. For those of you who don’t know it’s like a small computer version of a Walkman which contains music and if you plug it into things like the car radio, or the stereo, songs come out of it.

But it’s just an appliance.

And at what point did our society start queuing for appliances? We’ve turned into the affluent version of the former Soviet Union.

When the first toasters were released did people sleep out overnight in George St in their jaunty denim caps and waxed moustaches to be the first proud owner of a magic bread-warming machine? Did the ladies camp out in anticipation of being the first to own a curling wand? Was there a crush when the first Breville Kitchen Wizz hit the market?

We’ve all got too much time on our hands, too much damned money and too screwed up a sense of what is actually important or even interesting.

Personally I just love the fact that even the most hyper-groovy among our number can assuage their instinctive and loudly-voiced concern over dodgy, life-ending work practices in the developing world, just because it’s just such a totally cool must-have item.I’m dying to get one of those iPads they’re dying to make | Article | The Punch

4 people at my work have them (Chicago)... only 1 has said that it was worth it. The other didn't say that they didnt like it, they just said that it wasn't really worth it.

Not surprised. Essentially it's a big iPhone. That doesn't make calls. ;)

It's not even on my radar at the moment. I'll give it 12 months until there's a revision (a la 3G iPhone vs 3Gs) and then take another look but even then I'd never queue for such a thing.

I might get an iPed instead...

Boss bought one I think I'm getting a call on monday to put Itunes on his machine after I eradicated it from the network.

I popped into JB Hi-Fi yesterday and they had them on display, I picked it up, looked at the main menu, put it down and left store. There was nothing about it that could remotely excite me. It is the biggest iPod touch I have ever seen.

Received my iPad yesterday.

I would buy one if it had access to flash sites. It is not just the internet that uses flash I've got some network hardware that needs flash for their web gui.

I've noticed a lot of devs (programmers) that come into my office have em for easy demonstrations of things or to show something new to the software we use. Have also noticed they all still carry their laptop for when they have to actually edit, code or actually do anything apart from demonstrating stuff to that matter. The iPad to me is merely something to demonstrate and display shit and look cool (in a geeky way) while doing it. No doubt if I was showing a client a graphic or website I was creating for them an iPad would be handy, other than that tho I'd be lost with one.

ipad also rocks for that angry birds game - more screen real-estate than iphones..

I'm considering buying one for when I travel. I think it would be awesome for use as mobile storage (Passport scans etc) as well as for plotting and finding routes using google maps via 3G. Not to mention watching videos / listening to music while on a plane trip over (going to the UK).

Milenko then your better off waiting until the HP slate comes out, or some type of laptop/pad/table that is stand alone. From what I saw of the ipad was that it still is heavly dependent to be connected and synced to a PC. For me this is a deal breaker because I do think it should operate without needing to connect it to Itunes to sync your music collection, files.

In short it should be a pc in a tablet form, not a thin pc that still requires you to update and sync it using Itunes. Thats why I will wait until the hp slate or some other tablet that comes out next year out of the 1000's in production right now.

P.S.
If they cost $499 I would buy one, but not at the current price.

Yeah I'm not intending to travel until late next year - by then I'm sure either another competitor will have released something, or they will have their iPad3 out by then heh.

So I went into JB Hifi today to play around with one of their ipads.
It's basically what I was expecting of the device - and I'm still convinced it suits my travel needs perfectly.

I was tempted to buy one on the spot, rather than wait a year when I will use it most. So after looking for a sales rep for about 10 minutes (why the fuck dont they wear a uniform goddamnit) I asked if they had the 64gb Wifi+3g model in store. Nadda. You pay up front then they get ordered. They don't actually keep any in stock at the store.

So i promptly told her I'd just order it directly from Apple and she looked a bit confused.
Kinda sucks that there is only one store in Darwin stocking them; and they don't actually stock them.

If you don't need it for a year, wait for the 2nd iteration of the iPad.

Yeah discovered the same yesterday! (both the frustration of trying to find a sales person, then also after 10 minutes of crap finding out they don't have any stock) we (My work) has done the same and ordering both a 32gb 3G model and a 16gb wifi model from Apple. 3g model is on back order for at least a month (all the extra bits we ordered - case, camera, docks etc. have already shipped) :S

Yea I don't really understand the business model of being the only ipad retailer in Darwin, then not actually keeping any in stock. It just doesn't make sense to me. But oh well, no big deal. I'm in no particular hurry to get one.

i can tell you from first hand experience that if you order one online and it is out of stock, once it DOES come into stock it will be delivered fucking quickly. like, next day delivery. in darwin.

On travel we use a eee901, since it's running windows it does most things, can connect to a VPN back home, sort/delete photos, connect USB Ext HDDs without it whinging, has a webcam, wireless, 3g dongle addon if we ever needed it, and has an actual keyboard (this is probably the best bit over the iPad). Also the size is durable enough that we're not worried it's going to break at some point. When watching movies while on the plane you don't need to prop it up or hold it.

If you don't want any of that while travelling, get an iPad.

I bought a Eee PC 1005PR for my month long trip through Germany in a few weeks. One if the best pieces of tech I've ever bought.

As far as boot times are concerned, exceptionally quick - as quick or quicker than my desktop PC with SSD.

In terms of general performance, I've kept the OS very clean, but it has never kept me waiting. Surprisingly snappy. Perfect for travel purposes - video, music, browsing, communications etc.

Apple Australia has historically fucked over their resellers up here. can't see them changing tack anytime soon :)

I have to admit, the geek in me thought of the LCARS based data pads the first time i saw the iPad hehe.

I'd love an LCARS theme for it. Won't happen, but cool idea.

I bought one, was in the first batch of orders from Apple. The truth is, it's not for everybody, but so far it's proven it's worth more then it has played against it.
Wonderful for a portable portfolio (photography), and incredible GPS system for flying (airplanes) including flight planning and the like. I also use it as a diary (smaller then my previous diary) which is also very good, because it reminds you.

Add to that, some of the games are really fun time wasters, and it's a portable media tablet.

Good buy I think.
