a mate of mine has cs retail and when eva he puts cd on and connects to cd server it kiks him and tells him his HL has been modifed and it aint hes reinstalled it 5-6 times and still the same any ideas?

i had same problem when i had to re-install HL. Just download the HL 1.3 update and the CS 1.3 update.

I got this its a virus scan and clean. I may be wrong though. I had a virus that wrote itself into every exe on hard drive so it infected hl and hl said it was modified and i should check for viruses so did you check???
This is why it will say that even if you keep deleting / reinstalling cause it will just write itself back into the exe.

A possible way to fix it is install cstrike on to hd per normal enter the cd key ect.... and copy the whole half-life or counterstrike folder of someone whose works onto your computer, via lan, cdburner or physically adding hd and delete the original installation. This worked for me when nothing else seemed to
