Okies. The iPhone app thread has kicked me in the arse to do an Android one. Having only used the phone for a few days my experience is limited... but hopefully there will be something here for everyone.

Edit: I'm slowly adding the QR codes under each app title. Get Barcode Scanner to use them. Then you don't have to search the app store to find them! I didn't embed the images... :\

This is a great RSS reader that can sync with Google Reader. Really nice customisable interface and intuitive "mark as read" taps.

Cool for looking up products online via their barcode. Also good for scanning those new quick link barcodes you see around the traps these days (square things with little random black squares in them? I might try and find them for these apps and post back).

This is some impressive shit. Uses image recognition of some description to work out what you've taken a photo of. Take a photo of the McDonalds "M" for example and it will recognise it and smash out some google search results for McDonalds on your phone. Awesome. I took a pic of the Die Hard Bluray and it not only got the right movie in the results, but the right media too. Also took a photo of a 360 controller and it recognised it. Pretty impressive stuff.

Use it to find pretty much anything in your vicinity... restaurants, servos, bottleshops, whatever. It's an augmented reality app so you basically hold up the phone look around (camera is on) and you can press on places as they come up on the screen. Worst explanation ever. Awesome app though. Google it.

I can vouch for Astro. Great file manager. It can also install stand alone apk files for you as well as uninstall.

Movie finder found my suburb and the offered me cinemas nowhere near me. I've always found what I wanted in Citysearch (Preloaded on Telstra ROMS) fine for this.

For what its worth my additions are (all for free u.n.o):

Google Navigation - [APPMOD][24.06.10] Brut Google Maps 4.3.0.4305-brut14 - xda-developers. Brings you full turn by turn navigation for free using the google maps. This is a hacked version as its only meant to be working for the US UK and Ireland right now. I use it daily. Too many features to speak of make this the best navigation system I've ever seen. It's fully integrated into everything google can touch on the phone.

Taskpanel lite - Kill apps you want to kill (if needed) and take back control.

Google Sky Map - Out and about with your loved one under the stars... turn this baby on and point your phone to the sky to see the constellations and spot where the Planets are.

3G Watchdog - keep track of your downloaded and uploaded data.

Australia TV Droid - Not the best TV guide as it only sees 3 days in advance but it does have Foxtel.

IMDB - Self explanatory.

Tapatalk - For viewing and posting on your top GU forum when your out and about(paid).

Games

Blow up lite - Plant your bombs and watch the structure fall.

Air control lite - A surpisingly addictive game with minimal GFX but brilliant touch screen interface.

Bonsai Blast - Played Zuma on your PC? this is kind of the same.

Jewels - One of the Top free apps in the market for a reason.

Sports

Total Footy - Get your live AFL scores here.

F1 Live Racing - Great app for all things F1 including a news feed and live timing.

RugbyNut Live Score - All the top world competitions.

Some new ones I've downloaded and tried. All are free.

Apps Organizer - Group your apps (say games) into one icon/folder (similar to the new feature on the iphone 4).

Handcent SMS - Better SMS client then the default HTC one. Widget is smaller and GUI much better.

XDA Developers - An app to view and post on the XDA forums.

Appbrain - Its an Android Market app. Browse on your desktop at AppBrain - the best Android apps and games on the Android market select new apps and then sync them (or uninstall them) remotely. More useful then it may seem at first as it also keeps a record of what you;ve installed for easy reinstall after a reset or new ROM load say.

Timerific - Schedule for your phone to go silent at midnight and back on at 8am. Can also control wifi, bluetooth etc. Switch them all off at night (or a specific time) and then choose when to reactivate.

Qik - Live video streaming

Handcent SMS was great until it made all my appstore downloads not even start. I uninstalled Handcent and then all the shit I'd queued instantly downloaded. Silly program.

Check out Smart Measure res... it's right up your alley.

Edit: Ok. It's an AWESOME app. Very accurate from what I can tell... but I don't have anything to measure properly.

Unfortunately though, it smashes your battery. Big time.

Another for the list. Get the paid version.

Launch-X pro. It's a widget that you can put program shortcuts in. Basically now on the bottom half my home screen there is a 4x6 grid of icons instead of 2x4. Lots of options and very customisable. Great stuff.

I saw Smart ruler and dismissed it but didnt notice Smart Measure, that'll come in handy for sure.

Launch-x : I'd rather use folders (via Apps Oganizer) than cram more onto the screen. I like the default 1x1 size but some widgets could use their alloted space better.

I can't get the temperature thing to work, but everything else is fantastic. The "Define" and "spell" commands are awesome.

Map is so good. "Map nearest supermarket" is what I tried and it was so bang on. So so good and so accurate.

fuuuuck that's awesome - but do you have to have Michael Cera's voice to get it to work? =)

incidentally, if you're using FireFox, don't forget there's an add-on that can generate Android barcodes from the current page URL. Search for 'mobile barcoder'.

XBMC Remote

My pick goes to the XBMC Remote App. I still have an original Xbox for watching movies on the small TV upstairs in my room and can now control it via a touchscreen controller on my phone that also handles its own onscreen library browsing and cover art etc. Obviously works fine for HTPC versions as well.

This is why I love non-iphones. Windows Mobile 6.5 HD2, ported to Android Froyo (GPS works now too so everything goes), and now XBMC remote control :D

Probably not the best reason to love non-iPhones, give that you can hack an iPhone to run Android as well. And XBMC remote has been on the iPhone a long time. Just sayin'. ;)

I can control my XBMC fully with full media integration (seeing the banners of the TV shows/movie info etc) AND Stream my entire XBMC music folder to my iPhone ALL WITHOUT jailbreaking.

And I've been doing that for a year or so now...

If you're talking about getting Android to run on the iPhone, it's about as hard as... say, getting Android to run on the HD2. ;)

But you're right - that is part of why I like it, and that is why I haven't done it.

so are there apps to track and stop 'net data usage if you're about to go over your cap? and do these things run all the time like windows services or do you have to start them up everytime you power on the phone?

There are services that run in the background from applications - I would then rightly assume so aegis.

nice, but i'd rather the handset tracking it's own usage than referring to a website - as that page says, the virgin site might be up to 2 days behind.

I use this > 3G Watchdog - Android app on AppBrain. Its great. Every so often I'll reset the totals in line with what Telstra tell me is actual metered data. Telstra will release their own App soon.

But you get billed by what is on their site... Not what actual data you use. They have been known to be quite different at times.

Writing an app to monitor the phone's actual data in/out, then turn off data connectivity once it hits your set megabyte allowance wouldn't be the hardest thing in the world to write. You could even get it to restore data connectivity on the date that your plan rolls over each month.

The question I'd ask is why would you do such a thing? These phones are the internet. If you're worrying about going over your quota, get a bigger quota. Take away the internet from these 'phones', and you might as well have a Nokia 3210. :P

Anyone thats a bit of a star trek fan there is a really fun droid app called Tricorder displays a bunch of cool bits of information as if it was a real scanner with funky star trek sound effects.

I.e. solar activity, weather, wifi hotspots, scans sound lvls and has a compus as well.

my 30 year old brother in law wears a com badge .. in public... all the time... i'll be steering clear of that app =)

I use WunderRadio. GPS is used to find your location and it then lists every local radio station based on where you are. Clicking them opens up the stream. Has a whole bunch of other features I don't really care about too.

Wordfeud is fun. Like Scrabble basically.

WunderRadio = win. Still the best net-radio app for iPhone in my opinion (and for Android too, it seems). It was frustrating to use until Apple introduced multitasking though, as you had to keep it open and couldn't do anything else.

The updated facebook app is very good. I love the scrollable photo/video draw at the bottom. Still no facebook chat though.

• There's a notifications bar.
• There's a new photos drawer on the home page, for easy access to photos and videos from your news feed.
• Events support.
• Now you can update your status with one click.

has anyone managed to find a decent music player? the one that comes standard on the nexus is ok, but it has no equaliser.

There are none that I can find that have an EQ on them. Then again most audiophiles round the traps will tell you that you wont need one with a good set of headphones.

I know that I was looking for the same thing when I first got the Desire as any buds I used didn't sound too good. However once I tried it with some good headphones the EQ wasn't an issue for me anymore.

No need to go that high if you don't want to. The iphone headset doesn't sound too bad (I've tried it) and its $35.

EQ is rubbish, unless you're an audio engineer/producer. My not-so-humble opinion is that you should listen to the music as it was intended - both for artistic and technology reasons.

The are only 2 real prerequisites, if your device itself isn't poop, and those are a decent pair of headphones, and audio files of reasonable bit rate.

I use mixZing. It has an eq.

Tasker is just fantastic. So handy. I drive into work, my phone automatically goes into silent/vibrate mode. Unanswered calls are SMS'd back with a message saying that I'm at work and to SMS what they're after. My GPS automatically switches off.

I get home my Wifi goes on and my ring tone is set to loud until it goes down to low automatically at 10pm. They are set loud again at 10am.

I even have it setup to turn my media volume down low and automatically open my music app when I plug headphones in.

Any function the phone has basically can be automated. I'm going to setup the speaker to come on when I'm on a call and I put the phone down on a flat surface. Just got to work out how. :P

It can get pretty complex, but it is so rewarding when you work it out. Once you've got it right, it's flawless. You can even map gestures to execute commands and because of the vast combinations, you can get quite creative.

It's about 3 pounds but well worth it. Even if you only set it up for one thing.

I just downloaded the Dolphin Browser HD. Really quite amazing. Didn't think web browsing could get any better than the stock browser on Android, but it does!

Highly recommended.

Edit: Also check out Pulse. It's a feed reader. Quite graphical. Worth a look.

I've been using pulse for a few weeks now too and I like it. I've removed Engadget and Cnet as the same feeds are on Pulse.

Recent apps I've found useful:

Skydroid - Golf GPS only $2 but worth it. I've tried all the free GPS's and this beats em
Easyscorecard - Again for the golfers.
Mobweather - Cheap BOM data weather app. Its basically Pocketweather with the radar etc.
Slice It! - Good timewaster of a puzzle game
VPlayer beta - Has replaced Rockplayer - no more watermark :)
Advanced Call History - self explanatory

I installed this and turns out the "always for free" application went paid. If you update the "free" version, you need to pay to unlock it.

By the way, Chrome to Phone is AWESOME. Pushing web pages to your phone instantly. I always look up peoples addresses on Google Maps before I drive there. Now I can just hit the Chrome to Phone button in my browser and my phone automatically opens the Google Map app!

Was also using SwiFTP tonight to move music onto my phone wirelessly. I'm sure I've mentioned this app before anyway.

Man, the new version of Google maps is so good. Two finger swiping to bring the map plane down in 3D, voice directions inbuilt (no more Brut mod) and the coolest thing of all is that when you get to where you're going it actually shows you the Street View of the address you punched in. Awesome.

Anyone who has a HTC Desire should get the MIUI ROM. 1.1.14. Unbelievably good. Just a few notes:

- by FAR the quickest and best looking ROM to-date.
- FTP client integrated.
- Plethora of themes.
- Easy access to all hardware switches (ie. Wifi, etc), hardware statistics and application usage statistics. So in depth.

Check it out yourself.

Thought you Android guys might be interested in Notes in the Box. Notesy/PlainText are apps that have completely replaced the default note app on iOS devices for many people, myself included. Essentially these apps sync your notes, real-time, with your DropBox account. So simple, so handy.

I'm about to pay $25 for the best Golf course app I've found so far. Its called Mobitee and there is a free version to dl and try but it only works for the first 5 holes. It also has the most Aussie courses mapped out (54 for SA alone which is WAY more than any other app I've tried).

Here is the highlights from the Market which I wholly agree with.

? PRECISE GPS TOOL (Distances to front, middle and back green, hazards, doglegs, distance ...)
? AN AERIAL VIEW OF EACH HOLE
? AN FLYOVER OF EACH HOLE - this is very cool and super handy
? A COACH (Club advice for each shot based on your own distances per club)

The one I use on my iphone is golfshot as it actually has all the courses in Darwin.
They do an android version.

BTW using a GPS is actually against the rules of golf but that only really matters in a competition.

Don't know what the android phones are like but most golf aps need the GPS running the entire round which really drains the battery.

Okies changed the radio on my MIUI ROM. Heaps better now. About the same as it was before I changed the ROM. Reception is shitty where I work and I usually have about 55% when I get home. Had 50% tonight. Still not ideal, but worth it considering the fact I couldn't really ask for anymore from a ROM.

Might see how Juice Defender goes tomorrow.
