greens with 9 in the senate too. The former national independents want broadband as a priority. Minority labor with greens and independents with the balance would be a good result. NBN going ahead and a good chance of the filter being blocked.

What seemed like a horror election might wind up the best thing that could have happened to this country in a while.

I've experienced lots of hung elections when I was back in Ireland. Coalitions with independents or small minority parties is common. It has made for the most part very stable Irish governments as the cabinet is never 100% formed from a single party. That dynamic alone (where major party whip had no power over those ministers) creates a very diverse cabinet with differing opinions/expertise.
Since 1989 neither of the two major parties has been able to form government on their own. The current Irish government is formed from a major party, two greens and an independent. Those three MP's are all ministers in the government. I expect Gillard will have to do the same here and offer portfolios to the independents and maybe the green (although hes a first time member so I suspect he may not be able to manage a top job).
As already pointed out those independents are ex National party members. They are country pollies who left the Nationals for a reason and country people want the NBN. I fully expect Gillard (who has first crack at it anyway) to make a successful deal with them.

Whoever forms government will likely call an election as soon as some weakness in the opposition is sensed in an effort to govern on their own. With a hung parliament there is likely to be many triggers for a double dissolution election so we may be back at the polls a lot sooner than we think.

Then again in Oakeshott's electorate Labor only got 13% of the vote. But he got offered a Ministry so perhaps that assisted in his decision.

Suicide... I doubt it. He will get a lot done for his electorate now. Voters wont give a damn who gave em what they wanted/needed next time the polls come around, fact his he (may have) delivered and his vote% will grow.
Unlike Katter the idiot who stated his reason for going with the Libs was because they gave him more of his 20 items then Labor did. So now Labor are in without his vote where will that leave him... Oh yeah 0 from 20 thats where. He knew that that the other two Indo's were going to side with labor yet instead of falling in line and getting what he could for his electorate, he went rouge. Do you think his electorate will thank him for that ?
In the end all I personally care about is getting the NBN through.

I agree Mungus this is pretty much exactly what I wanted. A labor government so we get the NBN but without enough power to get the Internet Filter through the Senate. Its WIN WIN!
