OK I thought it would be cool if we could run some sort of LAN based file sharing software like kazaa etc. at DGA, because doing it through windows sucks balls. So Raker, Paladin and I were discussing it, and Raker seems to think all we need to do is set up an E-Donkey Server on a computer, and then install client software on each computer. It would require a little more effort in organising your files, but it would make it a lot easier for leeching, with multiple user downloads etc. So would anyone be interested in installing the software if it was made available at the LAN?? Im sure paladin is interested because his computer is tied up with people leeching from him for about half the LAN.
I've used both edonkey and winMX, winMX is a little homo merely for it's interfacing while edonkey is basic as, the only thing that people would need to do is to make sure that all file names stay the same
The way that edonkey works, is it grabs the file your after off one machine, then searches any other computer connected to the server and grabs the exact same file (name and size and i think) and grabs a part of that as well, so the way it works is the more people that have the file the faster speed you will get as it gets different chunks of the file from different people, it works great, I have already set up an edonkey server before and would be willing to do it again as all the server does is store a library of files and pulls bugger all resources ;)

no, they wouldn't.

no, it doesn't operate off file name at all, apart from the initial search. file size yes, kind of. it checksums (hashes) the file (calculates a value for the file based on the value of each byte in the file), which is almost always (effectively always) unique per file. so when you start downloading a file, edonkey, or whatever p2p program, searches first for the name of the file, and then subsequently for files matching the same hash, and requests chunks of the file from each individual host, then whacks them together at your end.
i'm not even sure if edonkey servers store lists of files themselves, i think it simply acts as a pass through agent to direct search requests to the clients individually, napster i believe did keep file lists on the server (hence why they were sued, i believe). anyway, most of this was conjecture, except the bit about hashes, that was fact.
I download shit loads and I dont get anything back when I leech at the LAN.
Except for Paladin - 200GB HDD - DA Man.
So yes getting a good system going so ppl can leech but not affect ppls systems so they can continue to play.
I was really impressed with ZeReapers Machine when we tested out sending him shit loads on data and leeching his sys and he only lost only a few fps while playing CS.
:D I was sharing my pRoN. :D I saw all of it somehow found it's way into Rainwulf's storage folder. :D
I only turned it off when I had to play games. Soz but I don't have the fastest rig and will have to wait until next year to start building one. :(
But yes it would be alot nicer if everyone that went to the LANs had atleast one share folder on their system. (The crappy default windoze 'My Documents' folder dosen't count)
Yes I need another Lan to see if the xp machine is fixed.
If it is at the bridge club again I shall run a power cable from home so that Neo and myself have a stable, sterile power supply so ours computers won't crash.

Now to find an extension lead thats 3 kms long........
i have taken to bringing along my 1kilowatt power conditioner to all lans now, has power correction and voltage correction, but honestly, i have never had problems with power.... maybe its just a coincidence?
