Just played the demo of Space marine - graphics aren't super brilliant, but it is definitely fun. controls feel good. guns are suitably powerful. and launching via jet pack into an orc horde creates lovely gibs.
Hope they unlock the demo for everyone else soon :D
looks like it should be good fun. Squad mates are actually HELPFUL. but yeah, the graphics feel like they were developed on an NTSC TV system - warhammer is either dark and gritty and/or vivid with colour - nfi where they got this washed out palette from.
oh i forgot to point out, even tho it IS a console port, aside from the graphics and the limit on number of character entities visible at a time (still feels like a lot when they're swarming you), it feels like a PC game. Has all your video config and control options you expect from a PC game - including invert mouse, yay.
Played the full game for a bit over an hour last night and racked up 566 kills - this is 40K :D
i love that there is an achievement for killing 40,000 enemies.
you don't notice the slightly sub par level detail and, somehow, i've found myself looking at some terrain pieces and going "wow, that's awesome" - they've lovingly recreated much of the terrain set pieces as seen in White Dwarf magazine. Even the dead imperial guardsmen are scattered about in poses lifted directly from the minatures line :D
Oh one other cool thing. Getting into the game is super fast, and after that you never see a loadscreen. So either it has a map as big as GTA, or they handle level transitions *really* well. (there are cutscenes so they probably load during these, but you're never left waiting for the game to finish reticulating its splines or some such)

really? i played the demo for about 20 minutes before i was sooo bored i deleted it and decided that ive given up on all warhammer games from that day forth.
Quote from Aegis;400201: then you were never a fan of warhammer, and you're dead to me ;P ^ that's pretty accurate really, i like the idea and the lore, never been that much of a fan tho.
Quote from rec;400205: Killing waves of enemies for hours and hours just isn't fun for me.
I really enjoyed the demo, but the idea of doing that for more than the length of the demo wasn't attractive.
err.. so why do you play *any* shooters then? if you boil it down like that, that's what all of them are. Space Marine has an engaging story (as any good FPS should) and is backed up by great gameplay, good voice acting, and some of the best gibs i've ever seen in a shooter (despite the console-level graphics).
also, deploying your devestator in MP is awesome when you first discover you can :D P2P networking is fail though, although lag wasn't as bad as i expected, it was still annoying.
Not at all. This employs a truly a wave-based gameplay mechanic. Not many shooters do that, and the ones that do generally bore me to tears; Bulletstorm, Serious Sam and so-forth are snooze fests.
I do enjoy shooters, typically multiplayer, that involve a whole lot more than what is essentially mouse button mashing. I like being challenged by other human individuals or carefully constructed AI scenarios where smarts, tactics, map intelligence, weapon selection, reflexes, accuracy etc. are deciding factors.

Besides, I don't play most shooters, especially not ones where my opponent is waves if enemies - Bulletstorm, Serious Sam and so-forth suck balls.

you seemed to like Left4Dead a fair bit - that has exactly the same enemy mechanic (some stand around, some appear from off map) :P
re: your MP comments - you're basing your feelings about this game on your desires for an MP experience that you didn't get in an SP demo... gg there man :P

Left 4 Dead is equally snoozey. It's great, I guess, for 30 minutes. In fact, Steam says I only have 3.9 hrs on record for L4D2. So I had a good 6-7 play sessions with it. :P
Lots of single player shooters and other action games have deep, enjoyable gameplay mechanics. Some even sporting some of those same elements mentioned, which aren't always exclusively multiplayer.
Quote from rec;400219: Hmm I guess they purge hours played after X amount of time - nothing visible. But yeah I did play a lot more of L4D - probably 20ish hours.
yeah my CSS time has been purged like 3 time, says 200= hours but i know its in the thousands.
Space marine's MP is def fun, tho hampered by P2P rubbish and auto-on mics. But the tactics are cool. each class has ways to counter the other classes - eg: Devestators (heavy weapon guys) are slow and can't roll out of danger the way Tacticals can, nor can they fight hand-to-hand, but once deployed, if they see an enemy, it dies. Deploying locks you in place though, so if an Assault guy gets within jump range and is out of your initial field of view, you're probably dead. This is one of the few games where a heavy weapon FEELS like a heavy weapon should - LOTS of damage dealt fast.
Anyone bought this and playing it on a fairly low end PC?
I found a site to buy it for $25, but im not sure my lappy will run it smoothly. lappy specs: I7 dual core something 6gb DDR3 pretty sure it has a HD4860 mobility, but cant remember
Quote from rec;400340: It's not very demanding as far as I can tell. The demo ran smoother than most games I've played in the last year.
Where can you get it for $25? I'd be interested in picking it up for that price. hmm in that case, i'll buy it just for the potential co-op.
from here Rec Warhammer 40000 Space Marine CD Key i have about 10 mates who have used them for this alone in the last 2 weeks, keys are steam compatible and usually emailed within 2 hours.
be aware the co-op mode isnt in yet - that's upcoming free DLC. and it's not proper co-op. It's identical to The Last Stand in DOW2. Just with added optional objectives that change with each playthrough.
OK, so after playing for an hour or 2 last night, i have to admit the demo didn't do the game justice, the story is rather engaging, and the combat even tho its the same thing over and over its rather fun.
not to mention it runs on my lappy on high settings at a solid 50-60 frames, im rather impressed.
Played for about four hours, up to the mission just after my thunderhawk went down, noe unable to continue tje game as it crashes everytime the new dropship tries to pick me up. Apart from that i am having a ball with the game ;) Little bit worried about an Astartes healing from a melee kill, smells a bit too much like Chaos Sorcery Multiplayer was interesting but full of lag death for me :(
Mulitplayer in this is pretty sweet. It feels like space marine combat should. Just clunking around with big fucking guns, but also fast melee if you want. The jump pack is handeld very well. Great feeling when you zooom down onto someone and start wreckin shit. Only negatives are the p2p servers which is my 1st time playing them when I actually gave a shit, so I was always annoyed whilst playing at how this has become acceptable coz it was so fucking crap. But that seemed to be only the 1st time playing. Since then the connection has been decent enough. Also only a few maps. But it's ok as I dont see it lasting a long time and theres big multiplayer games coming up soon anyway.
I bought the game tried it out, i have to say smashing the orcs over and over again just get slightly boring but i am a warhammer 40k fan so i played for the small movies after each mission to get the full scope of the story behind it finished it with in the day was fun and now i have deleted it after finding out that they are not going to release a sequel.
That did ruin it for me as i wanted to find out what happened in the next part of the story but they are booked working on the MMORPG Warhammer 40k Dark Millenium Witch is going to be fantastic... well it better be >.<.
