Just a heads up. Considering I spent like $200 on bank fees last year, I'm pretty happy with that.

If you have a Smart Access account with the Commonwealth Bank (which I imagine would be a lot of people), you can get your monthly account fee waived if you:
- Are under 21 years old

- Opened your account after 1/6/2010 and deposit $2000 each month (e.g. your salary)

- Are 21 to 24 years old and deposit "000 into the account each month (e.g. your salary)

- Are a student and present your student ID at any branch

Note that they don't do this automatically. I fall into two of the above categories and it wasn't till I called them that I got the fees waived.

They have had this for a while now. Also, if your a student, you will need to pop into your branch every year to update your student details

Ah ok. The 21 to 24 one was only implemented in October though. Don't know how new the others are.

Post 4

well that's great. i'm a lifetime customer and i don't qualify for any of those.

Post 5

NAB already have a $0 fee account and no need for any hassle ... also comes with a VISA debit card

Post 6

It's basically tailored for young people getting their first jobs.

Gotta get em hooked early.

Post 7

dollarmites for adults ;)

Post 8

You can get the fee free if you convert your old account like a Streamline to a smart access.

Post 9

Westpac did this for me up until I was no longer a student at CDU. This was up until I moved to Perth last year (im 23).

Now I'm with NAB. No fees whatsoever on all 3 of my accounts (visa debit, debit and internet savings).

Re: No account fees with NAB/other banks. But they don't have 4000 ATMs and awesome online banking :P

Post 11

NAB online banking is pretty good, and they use/own the rediteller network, so even if they don't have 4 thousand, they have an awful lot of them in Darwin.

how many of those ATMs are in Darwin tho? 2? 3?

Post 13

I don't know how much exposure to Bank West you guys have, but they have zero account fees, and they will cover all ATM charges, even ones from other banks, so I get to use any ANZ, NAB/Rediteller, Comm, Westpac or St George/BankSA atm, and get no fees.

Hmmm, BankWest sounds like a good deal at face value. Commonwealth also have access to BankWest ATMs, but no bank fees and a much wider variety of ATMs also with no fees sounds even better.

so 4? :P

They would have close to that 4000 as NAB are partnered with RediATM and so NAB users do not get charged to use them.
From NAB I know that there is an App so you can locate the nearest NAB & Redi ATM ... I'm not sure about CommBank.
And online banking works just fine. I'm not sure how you can say one is awesome if they both already do everything. Unless you can tell me what CommBank Online does better / more than NAB does?

Back to the first point about fee's ... NAB wins!

"The Commonwealth Bank has more than 4,000 ATMs ... over 1,000 more than any other bank in Australia." (Read: bank, not credit union or other financial institution.)

They just launched this 'Kaching' app that you can apparently use to transfer funds using via email, mobile number or Facebook. You can also use it to pay for purchases with your iPhone instead of using cards/cash, but it requires a special iPhone attachment that costs like $50 :( Still, Commonwealth always seem to be the first bank to try these sorts of things, and I like them for their innovation in this area.

Unless you can tell me what CommBank Online does better / more than NAB does? While I haven't had an opportunity to use NAB's online banking yet, other online banking systems I have used are almost archaic compared to NetBank. Very basic and sometimes annoying to use.

Post 18

facebook? srsly? automatic lose due to security then - commbank goes to bottom of pile.

Post 19

Yeh. That's the only reason I'm with commonwealth. That there netbank and commsec websites are painless and have lots of useful tools.

As for Facebook and banking, well... That's up to the user, and I with Aegis, a tad retarded, how many security flaws does Facebook have compared to the commonwealth bank website. Sometime websites can be overly integrated...

Post 20

to be honest, even with the fees and lack of ATMs - i probably won't ever change from commonwealth.

their online banking is second to none, their ATMs are the best (if rare), and on the few occasions i've had to use their customer service it's been completely painless.

even with the fees and lack of ATMsUm. I thought I just finished explaining how they have a shit tonne of ATMs and no fees (for a lot of people) O_o You could always ring them anyway... the woman I spoke to needed no convincing and if you play the 'lifetime customer' card I don't imagine it'd be too hard to swing an exemption.

Post 22

Ok so you need to lie to the Commbank to get a no fee account but anyone can go to NAB and get a no fee account ... go figure?!

Post 23

I thought banks were universally reviled, and that people accepted that they are all utter bastards.

But no, Bank fanboys.

Credit unions make sense, if you don't mind a very limited number of ATMs, poorer service and crappy online banking.

fair leap from necessary evil to ZOMGt3hAWESOMZ tho ;)

Post 26

Yeah well. Thinking CommBank is the better option and regarding them as ZOMGt3hAWESOMZ are not the same thing.

Problem with the system, if you were not meant to have been charged then if contact the bank they'll refund the fees taken.

i know what you said. perhaps the point i was trying to make was more this: commonwealth bank does not have as good a fee system as NAB, and not as many ATMs in darwin as other banks. it is the OTHER things they do better that keeps me as a customer.

as for the appealing for a fee exemption - yeah i may do that.

Post 30

fuck australian banks.

I switched to HSBC recently, soon enough the Chinese will have all the money so ill be glad to be with them :P and they'd have more ATM's around the world than all of the other aussie banks combined
