Kinda worrying when you think about it. Still kinda cool though and I like their recommendations (HD cache in CD-ROM, hehe)

why not just have the normal HD cashe all the cds? and have emulated cdrom drives?

Post 3

time and effort. thats why. 5-10 minutes to rip a single cd fully to hdd, plus multiple cds, plus games that require disc changing while playing, all in all its just fucking easier to have it on removable media.

That's pretty interesting. And I mean it's something that you wouldn't normally consider. See that disk bend :) Hmm... plus the site was done properly with a full set of results none of this dodgy "we are going to blow up cd''s for fun" crap but all professionally.

One thing sort of related to this. My dad had a copy of VB and err the centre of the disc was slighly cracked where it has the hole in the middle due to the cd case holder thing being a bit too good at holding the cd. Well into the cd-rom drive it went. It span up to read disk contents. Started the install and after a minute or so we heard this loud bang. One dead cd-rom drive :) The disc smashed into so many pieces and jammed the drive up good it took us forever to open it up and get everything out. But in the end it didn't work anymore anyway.. so he had to get a new drive. Made a huge mess too cause there were bits of plastic everwhere and bits of tin foil sticking to our feet and being taken all over the house.

I am still suprised that we are still using cd roms or plastics for the pyshical transport medium for today.

Also from reading that web page, you have to start wondering why they didnt try to spin the cds in a vacume instead, can you imagin the speeds they would reach without any resistance on the CD.

I think if we want to achive much greater bandwidth transportation, it would be better getting a ram drive or like they said on the web page to use hard disks instead of CD roms. One last thing, data or memory is not going to be an issue in the future of computer systems. Its going to be the speed at witch all data can be transported instead.
