on the me machine, right click on the internet connection icon, and somewhere in the advanced tab there's an option to 'share this internet connection' i guess, or 'allow other users to access the internet through this connection'. i've never actually used Me, but i know it has ICS, and that would be how you activate it.

The joys of having a dad in IT management. He wanted to boot WinME out the window also.

If you have to try using some 3rd party IC sharing software.

Me does connection sharing just fine, no third party addons required.

I know it does but sometimes there are always the mysterious gremlins that may appear. Last time I installed WinMe, the function to install protocols simply disappeared from windows.

To set up IC sharing on Windows ME (which is the computer with the net connection):

Part I - First, we need to install Internet Connection Sharing. If you have this installed already, skip to part II.

1) Click on the Start button.

2) Select "Settings" | "Control Panel".

4) Double click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon.

5) Click on the "Windows Setup" tab up the top of the window that appears. It will take a second to load, so don't be alarmed.

6) Scroll down to "Internet Tools" and left-click once on the Internet Explorer symbol, then click details.

6) Click the checkbox beside "Internet Connection Sharing".

7) Click the OK button. It will then install Internet Connection Sharing. Follow the setup prompts (they arn't too difficult). If it prompts for a disk you may choose to make one, but since you're using Windows XP as the client, you do not have to. After all is said and done, you may have to restart your computer. Do so, then proceed to the next part.

Part II - If you've already got Internet Connection Sharing installed, then you can skip right to this part. If not, go back to Part I.

1) Right click on My Network Places.

2) Select Properties from the menu that appears.

3) Ensure you are on the "Configuration" tab.

4) Scroll down to "TPC/IP -> Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet NIC" or whatever your NIC is (Lan card).

5) Click on Properties.

6) Click the radio button titled "Specify an IP address".

7) In the IP Address section enter "192.168.0.1".

8) In the Subnet Mask enter "255.255.255.0".

9) Click the OK button. You will be asked to restart your computer, but don't yet, since we're not finished yet.

10) Open Microsoft Internet Explorer, typically by clicking the small "e" button on the lower left part of the screen near the Start button. Else, try double clicking on a similar icon which is typically on the desktop. If all else fails, click on the Start button, go to "Programs", and then select "Internet Explorer".

11) Single-click on "Tools", then single-click on "Internet Options".

12) Single-click on the "Connections" tab; it should be about the centre of the screen.

13) Under "Local Area Network (LAN) settings" single click on the "Sharing" button, and click "Enable Internet Connection Sharing" and "Display Icon on Taskbar". Displaying the icon is optional, but it definately works wonders to easily enable or disable internet connection sharing or as a firm indicator that Internet Connection Sharing is installed and enabled.

14) Configure your NIC card and Modem settings to ensure that they are correct.

15) Click the OK button, and then restart your computer.

Part III - Internet Connection Sharing is all set up on your server. To configure your client, using Windows XP, do the following:

** NOTE: The process described below is not so accurate as above, since I have little to no experience with Windows XP. I can presume however that many of the functions are similar. If I make a mistake, someone please CORRECT me or else post the correct way to do it. Thus, the instructions here are pretty broad, but hopefully you'll be able to figure it out.

1) Set your IP to Dynamic (IE Obtain an IP Address automatically).

2) Ensure that your computer never dials a connection, and that it only accesses the netwrok through a LAN connection. (Typically done in Internet Explorer under "Tools" | "Connections"

3) Restart.
