i fund this great idea a few weeks ago but came accross it today it can be found at http://www.overclockers.com/tips821 now after viewing this i would think u would be drooling :D well is anyone game or stupid enough to try it? i would like to watch it in action if u do complete it
Hard disk are built in a clean room, and there is a really good reason for this. Also all hard disks are contained in a vacume, this provents any dust getting into the disk drive.
No fucken way am i going to open up my hard disk drive and try this mod out. It tottaly stupid and i bet that guys harddisk drives fail after a peroid of time too.
No hard drives are not in a vacuum.. if you look on your hdd it has breather holes.. with a filter on them and maybe a little bit of text something along the lines of 'Do Not Cover!' (Oh look DNC :)) Anyway I think this is due to the fact that the hard drives heat up and air expands, etc.. dunno.
Seen this mod a few times before.. I don't think you can really say whether it will have a negative affect on the hard drive but sure chances are that any such fiddling carries SOME risk. I know that last sentence is somewhat contradictory but sometimes I can't help myself. Whether or not such actions will have a detrimental affect on the drive depends on the environment that the procedure occurs in and the care and skill of the person doing it.
heres a tip, if you want to keep dust out of something, low pressure is a bad idea, dust proof rooms are kept at positive pressure so that it stays outside.
If you get a leak with low pressure, its gonna suck all kinds of shit it
And if for some reason you did have a vacuum, then you dont have to worry about it expanding when it gets warm :P
if i was to take a wild guess, id say probly not a vacuum, but a nice inactive gas that doesnt react with anything, like argon or something.
The HDD is not a vacuum, and the breather hole is there to equalize the pressure between inside the drive and the outside when the inside of the drive heats up and it increases in pressure (which would make it burst if there was no method of equalizing the pressure or make it implode if the temperature was lower)
