If you own a Voodoo III 2000, this is an interesting trick I discovered by accident a few nights ago.
I noticed that the Voodoo III 2000 and the Voodoo III 3000 used the same drivers. For a card that's ment to be different, that's strange. So, I got to thinking; what's the difference, mmm? Prolly the same card, with a higher clock. So, I did a little experiment; in a moment of stupidity and haste, I reflashed the BIOS of my Voodoo III 2000 with the Voodoo III 3000 BIOS. It reported success, so I rebooted. And, sure enough:
"Voodoo III 3000 PCI"
Free upgrade, woot!
But, seriously, nothing comes for free. I did some research into the cards, and found that someone else had found out this procedure before I. They gave more specific details, such as, the clock speed of the Voodoo III 2000 is 133mhz, whereas the Voodoo III 3000 is 166mhz. So, basically, you're just overclocking the card. This, of course, makes it run warmer; even with the case off my computer, after about 10 minutes of operation I noticed corruption appearing on the screen during OpenGL applications (Quake III and Half Life), significant slowdown, and the card was burning hot. So, I put a pedestal fan over my case, and it's nice and ice-cold now. But the overheating is a problem; without the fan, the card DOES and WILL overheat, with various problems stemming from that.
Now... all I have to ask is... I wonder what other cards this works for?
Must... resist... reflashing Voodoo... with Raedon 8500 BIOS... must...
