[Attachment 7459] With only a week before the Australian release of Civilization 5 on Friday, 24 September, Firaxis have been ramping up the PR with a flurry of last minute activity.

Pre-load on Steam is available NOW. Several articles covering the game's MP mode have been published, as well as a live play of two devs trying the MP out with each other. Links after the jump.

We might actually be able to get through a PBM on this one!

Post 4

I'm going to play the demo prior to purchase, having never played a Civ before.

Unfortunately the demo comes out at the same time as game release, not before. :/

Post 5

Yeah what a drag! There was never and doubt in my mind that I'd be buying it, but I was looking forward to a bit of a teaser with the demo a week or so before the game proper came out.

Post 6

Hang on!
The demo MAY be released on the day the US version goes live, so we may actually get 3 days play before release.
Need to check this.

Why we get shafted on both price and release date for a digital distribution is a whole thread of its own.

Hopefully that's the case!

Ok, so the digital manual has been released, and is available here.

Also, this thread suggests that the demo will in fact be released to the world at 9am on the 21st (US time).

Post 9

In case you're pissed about the game being $30US more expensive for Australians on steam.

Sid Meiers Civilization V 5 Game PC - ozgameshop.com <- $40.

Although from what I'm reading it's a subsidiary of 365games.co.uk - video games and accessories for PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, DS, PSP, PC & Mac so the game will probably come from England. Free freight though?

Post 10

Ugh. Discs. :/

I guess a $30 saving is pretty hefty though.

Post 11

Not having it on release day is enough reason for me to pay the extra and suck it up.

Also, there is official word on the unlock time and playability of the demo in this thread.

3 Civs, no changes to maps or game speed, 150 turns and it unlocks in less than 24 hours!

It's still a steam game even with the discs, and it's $40AU compared to the $80US on steam.

Not that i'm planning on buying it, I might if it wasn't such an insult price direct from steam.

Post 13

$50 ($49.99) here in the US... not $40.

Game looks sweet, alot of small improvements over the 4th and the new combat system looks more tactical, which is a nice change.

Post 14

yeah not buying anything 2K and Rockstar releases anymore - sick of their bullshit price hikes. used to be i pirated games because i couldn't afford it. now i can afford it i dont want to buy them because the publishers are cunts.

Post 15

yeh, i'm someone similar with other titles. i tend to buy the majors i have liked or think will be good. Plus, whats with the fucking deluxe version.... one extra civ... why even do that, just make one version.

Ozgameshop (which is british) is selling is for $40AU. AUS Steam is $80US and US steam is $50US.

Just to be clear :P

I hate bullshit regional pricing.

Civ 5 now out on Steam in North America: News - Now Available - Civilization V

Anyone spotted the demo in the wild yet?

Post 18

YES, mine is downloading as we speak!

Type this in to your browser "steam://install/65900" and it will begin!

Apparently this is easier than trying to find it on steam, and mine should be close to finished, even though I am hundreds of kms away from being able to play it today!

EDIT: Ready to roll, bugger that I have to work and am so far away...

Post 19

No stacked units, epic fail.

Post 23

That was a design decision, and most reviews have praised it.

Post 24

Agreed, Its made land warfare a lot more interesting. But I've found sea warfare a tad more annoying (but I did suck at the warfare in Civ4).

Most reviews don't have any ball's. This version of the game is a miss for me, played since CivI, and got to say this one is a let down. Maybe pic it up when its "0 over steam, until then have other more fun games to play.

Post 26

The whole war mechanic has changed because of this one significant modification. No longer is it simply a matter of stacking eleventy billion units and sneaking up on someone - you can really see them coming now which adds to both realism AND gameplay IMO.

Ranged combat is nice too.

Post 27

yeh, I went the japanese. They have the ability for their units to fight at full strength each fight. Which seems over powered IMO.

I took out 2 civs in a world map play with max opponents. But then my computer got chugging and I'll start again tomrrow. I started in south America, and trying to get through those rocky mountains and only been able to attack with one unit at a time as there was mountains on either side of my unit really hurt at times. But I found backing up a melee unit with a single ranged behind, in this case it worked well. I used the ranged to combat any units about to attack my melee and I used my melee to attack the town.

Also before I started combat, I bottle necked my opponent in by putting a scout between those mountains. This stopped his settlers from getting out :) I also like how cities can do ranged attacks, means I can leave them unguarded with barbarians around.

So far my on few griefs about the game is the graphics. I'd prefer nation boarders to stand out more and the cloud fog of war looks odd to me. Also automation of workers does not include automation of road and trade route buildings. I'd also prefer if they would double the effective range of the war general, as when I was using large armies his effective range of adjacent tiles was annoying, I seemed to position him first then my combative units.

All in all, really liking the new civ and the changes. Its still fun, will keep you up late and will chug your computer if youve got farrrrrrr to much going.

Post 28

BTW, the great general CAN stack with a military unit, it works like a settler or worker in that way.

Post 29

yeh, got that :)

Also lost 2 swordsman while they were embarked and some random barbs destroyed them haha.
