[Attachment 8506]The Battlefield 3 beta went live last night, for most people. I gave it a good romp on PC last night, and I'm pleased to say that my first impressions were mostly positive. I've decided to cover off some key points for those of you that haven't had a chance to play yet, or for those of you that have and are looking for an argument.

First off, I think it's important to note that Origin - the application, not the service - isn't the devil like so many people were expecting. It's attractive, clean and it's relatively stable. There's really nothing to be too upset about, other than the fact you won't be able to use Steam, which is certainly the platform with a better feature set.

[Attachment 8507]Battlelog however is a pleasant surprise. It has a plethora of nifty features and proves to be a very competent server browser, unlike Bad Company 2's in-game server browser. It's a throw-back to stand-alone server browser applications of yesteryear such as GameSpy 3D and All Seeing Eye - I for one welcome that move. Additionally you can create platoons, manage your soldier profile, look at results from your recent matches, track your unlock progress and much more.

After choosing a server and loading in I spent a few minutes being confused about how to configure my controls or change my graphics settings. It turns out you actually have to deploy yourself into the map before being able to hit escape. And then you can't seem to bind mouse buttons anyway, which was the first obvious bug or oversight I came across. The UI specifically is presented in a very slick manner and appears generally well thought out.

[Attachment 8508]On my i7 920 with 6GB of DDR3 and an Nvidia GTX 590 I was able to run BF3 on Ultra, and it's mighty smooth. That's quite an accomplishment considering how good it looks. Running it across all three of my screens wasn't as accommodating however and slumped into unplayable territory. I'm sure if I threw the detail down to medium or low it would be feasible but I haven't yet given that a run.

Moving onto the gunplay: it feels great. While juggling class load-outs many times it became obvious there isn't a poor or even misleading weapon. There is an impressive balance amongst the arsenal and their handling is relative to their performance. Weapons that don't have much stopping power don't act or sound like it, but they act and sound apt. Having weapons in a first person shooter "feel" good is a task that evades many developers, but in my opinion they've hit the nail on the head with Battlefield 3.

[Attachment 8509]You'll die a lot quicker than in Bad Company 2, but personally I like the skill required and intensity that swift encounters create. I don't mind dying at the hands of a well placed burst, which happens relatively regularly, but I really do mind having to unload most of a clip into someone to kill them - so this really suits my play style preference.

For those worried about snipers, they're now highlighted for you with the brightest scope reflection imaginable. They're hard to not spot in the open and a burst of two of your rifle will drop them from range. Just ensure there is cover to pounce between as 1-3 sniper shots at medium range will be the end of you.

[Attachment 8510]Movement is generally fluid, sharp and fast, definitely more-so than Bad Company 2 which felt a little "clunky". I may get a bit of grief for saying it, but the on-foot combat - which is all you get to do in the beta - positions itself closer the cleanliness of Call of Duty than any previous Battlefield title. It absolutely isn't Call of Duty, but I must stress my comparison is not a bad thing. Objectively speaking, being a fan of both franchises, Call of Duty does infantry combat very well.

My only real gripe is that the beta is indeed on-foot only. There are no vehicles like we saw in the riveting Caspian Border multiplayer video. Operation Metro is purely man-on-man, but there are some diverse areas to trek through. The map gets better as you progress, moving from a generic open landscape into a very atmospheric cover-driven underground Metro network, and then into a Parisian metropolis.

Finally, I must mention that the audio is amazing, in typical DICE fashion. The sound of a rocket whizzing past your face in the tunnel of a train station is almost enough reason to ask to be shot at.

Stay tuned for our review when the game lands across all major platforms on October 25.

accurate review rec.

Running it on my i7-930 6gb and 6970 (ati woo) on ultra, no problems at all. apparently i dont see everything though (aegis) :) was a treat to play a game that smooth.

Agree with everything there really, especially your comments on the movement. All the other incarnations of the BF series have this TERRIBLE issue with getting caught up on the smallest of objects (steps into buildings is my pet peeve in BC2).

The knife takes some getting used to as well - it's not a simple slash and run affair. It's a pre-set animation that exposes you to being shot in the face several times. I also haven't managed to get it working from the front yet; only the rear.

Hearing the feedback about Origin and Battlelog is encouraging. My resolve may be weakening...

Post 5

I had a few confusing moments when Origin launched a web-page instead of my game, heh.
It's pretty neat though and quite responsive. It's WAY better than any of EA's in-game server browsers, so yay.

Edit:

For comparison on hardware, I'm running it on ultra with the following set-up:

i7 2600k
8GB DDR3
GTX580
P7-Sabretooth (mobo).

Not even a hint of slow down at any point so far.

Supposedly Ultra and High are the same in the beta. I used Logitech's SetPoint to fix my mouse "unable to bind" problems.

Post 7

yeah was tempted to do that with setpoint, but ffffsck annoying

Origin is shiny and attractive, but it is not user friendly.

Also, your soldier name for BF3 can only be your origin username. And you cannot change this.

What's unfriendly about it?

I believe this is only for the beta as leaked Battlelog screenshots showed multiple soldiers.

From what I've read it was available in the Alpha, but is gone in the beta. In EA's fast growing FAQ, there's a bit of info.

How do I change my in-game soldier name?
A key part of the Battlefield 3 experience is the social features and ranking provided by Battlelog. In order to keep things clear between your identity on Battlelog, your Origin friends list, and your in-game identity - the game uses your Origin ID as your soldier name. This ensures that the players you socialize with in Battlelog are identifiable in-game.

I'm at work so I can't nitpick at the origin interface to load a game, but as lenko said having an interface load another interface is annoying if not redundant. And it just didn't seem intuitive. It isn't like the iracing web interface where user functions are easy to access even if it looks dirt ugly, but it is shiny. Granted it is better than the POS BC2 has.

If you can't change your soldier name is there at least support for adding clan tags?

Post 13

Under Platoon it seems.

Post 14

Yeah inside your Battlelog profile you can add a clan tag.

Battlefield
Battlelog daily maintenance slot is 8am GMT/9am CEST/3am EDT/12am PDT which is why it is down at the moment. #BF3BETA

Caspian Border server password leaked. Battlefield Community Manager, Daniel 'zh1nt0' Matros posted this:

"Ah, and there it was. The password for Caspian Border.

"So the deal with Caspian Border in the Open Beta is that it is only for internal testing at the moment.

"Passwords are being given out to selected community members, sites and clans to help us evaluate the feedback we are getting as well as making sure that the map is continiously being tested.

"The passwords will be changed on a frequent basis and I am personally making sure that as many community people as possible who are engaged in different community sites get the chance to try the map out and supply us with feedback.

"This in itself was a challenge. This is only meant to be for internal testing. When footage and passwords start being spread around, it´s difficult for me to justify the community´s cause about joining us in our internal testing.

"So please, if you are participating in the testing, please don´t post any footage and please don´t spread the password.

"If we can´t keep this in an organized fashion, I won´t be able to include the community into more cool stuff in the future"

Post 18

GU part of the community testing?! :D

Am i the only one who's noticed the similarity between Origin, and Origin Energy's logo? (and name, obviously).

Gas & electricity suppliers - Origin Energy Australia

I have to admit I thought they were too bright to start with; although after using them as they're intended (Tactical Lamp), they are amazing. Even if you're on the receiving end you still have a chance to fight back, even if it is spray and pray.

I have no idea whats wrong with my machine but i have an i7, 6GB DDR3, HD5870, and in order to get rid of the graphics chugging i have to run it on lowest settings possible and like 1400 res. its so annoying it'll run fine in 1920 but as soon as i look at someone it starts running like shit and i cant shoot properly. so only way i have found it to be smooth is those settings. Yes i updated the drivers.

Post 26

Played for about 15 minutes last night. Looks pretty good. Unfortunately my GPU is on its last legs so even on medium settings my frames were fail.

Might have to pull the 5850 out of the media centre.

:(

Post 27

Do it. Jimmy runs a 5850 and the game is silky.

Heretic, do you have the Catalyst drivers from the 27th, or the ones that replaced those on the 28th? This may be if interest: http://gamers-underground.com/content/1194-amd-replace-their-battlefield-3-optimised-driver.html

Post 29

Pretty sure i got the 11.9 drivers, 11.7 wasnt installing properly yeah. Ill try uninstalling and reinstalling again, because im getting some chugging even on lowest and 1400 res. 0% disk frag too. driving me crazy i didn't buy an alienware to run shit at lowest settings lol

Post 30

11.9 isn't what you want. You want the 11.10 preview driver (BF3 optimisations).

Post 31

ok sweet will install and test it out tonight. updated about 4 times since it came out lol. cheers
