Moving into College, the internet there is insane, 100mbs internet connection (I'll have screenies for you all eventually, as soon as I can find something large enough to download that won't send me broke instantly). The problem; at 100mbs, and charged 10c a meg for bandwith, you can imagine that "Oh yeah, I'll just download this program, and that program, and this other movie, and... OH JEEBUS ~$200 for internet?! It'd be cheaper to BUY the server. But it's 10c a meg outside Australia; it's only 5c a meg inside. Thus, I'd rather like to keep what downloads I have to do in Oz if at all possible.
A few questions:
1) What files are hosted on Gamers-Underground for download?
1.a) If any, where are they located?
1.b) If any, What are these files?
2) What cool Australian downloading sites does everyone know? Tucows, etc?
how do you think I feel - 20 cents per MB download at uni... I mean, my internet bill at one stage was $75 a month- not including mobile fone and normal fone costs.
one of my mates was doing around $400 a month (his parents were paying for him)- and another mate was "000 in debt to the uni because of his net habit!

Yeah, $25 a month, plus local fone calls, plus, my uni fone is on a network, so its more hassle to dial up, then you get booted whenever someone calls you (impossible to stop on the network) - and if you are lucky you get cut off within 4-6hours anyway etc etc.
Hey, do you have a normal POTS phone, or a digital phone on a switch? If you've got a normal POTS phone, get ADSL installed :P :P
Seriously though, price comparison between Internode ADSL (1.5Mbit, 8 gig limit) and this stuff...
Internode 8 gig = "49.95 a month Uni 8 gig = $800 a month
Oh yeah, your nice phat 100Mbit bandwidth won't sit on 100Mbit, you'll be lucky to pull a tenth that - you're not going to be the only student bent on doing mad downloads at night on the network :P
Ouch... The ridiculous thing is, they can get away with paying those kind of daylight robbery prices :(

Not quite....
Ping is a function of the length of the data path you're using, and the congestion of said data path. Higher bandwidth will often mean less congestion, and thus less latency. In addition, it takes less time (with the same data path) for a higher bandwidth pipe to send a packet than it does for a lower bandwidth pipe (512k ADSL gets better pings than 256k ADSL on the same exchange).
For that reason, satellite is crap for latency - you have a HUGELY long data path going up into space and back down again, but huge bandwidth.
ADSL is pretty good for latency - fairly short data path, but the processing circuitry kicks up your latency a bit. Bandwidth is ok.
Modems are crap for latency - short data path, processing overhead isn't too bad, but really low bandwidth.
Cable modems are good for latency - unless every turkey in the neighbourhood is chewing up all the bandwidth and saturating your connection.
So, if you NORMALLY have good latency and good bandwidth, and something comes along and eats all your bandwidth, expect your latency to climb. They are related issues.

I checked with the Uni; it's a T3 connection, which is 100mbs. But it DOES service the whole university; but seriously. 100mbs! Even with 100 users downloading at maximum, that's still 1mb per second, or 100k a second, which is twenty times faster then a 56k modem.

I don't know about the phones yet. But yeah. Really, I won't have to download too much at all, since the inter-university network is rather insane and has mega-uber-people on it with mega-uber amounts of various perfectly legitimate visual and audio media available to transfer over the network for free. What I'm gunna do probably is keep my dialup connection (500mb a month) for large downloads and just use the uni network for browsing. Or something. Not quite sure yet.

Remember thats 1 Megabit per second if there are 100 users. That equates to about 12.5 KB/s (Megabits you divide by 8 to get MegaBytes/KiloBytes)
the high school i went to had a quad t3 or t1 (not sure) but they didnt charge for it. So everyone dloaded to max capasity all the time ended up getting ~ modem speeds (but it was still free :) )
Thouse prices are a rip off, i think certain ports are cut off too so gameing online may be difficult, AND games that use excessive network congestion R BANNED!!!! - read the info they give out :(
Traffic within the Uni network is free. My best friend, who's been there a year already, came away from College with a milk crate full of pirate CD's... and he doesn't even have a computer. These were all burned by friends and whatnot... And all obtained within the uni... That's some serious data that I'll have access to.
Not that I'd ever condone software/media piracy, of course. Just stating that I would, indeed, have access to it.
If one was into that sorta stuff, one could theorise that there was not much of a need to download anything from the internet if this is the case.
