My theory is this.
Human beings are not designed to live in large groups. At best, human beings are designed to live in societies which number no more then one hundred; if you take on hundred people, you will generally find that 5 of the group are the 'leaders'. 10 further are toadies, or those who hang around with the leaders obeying their every whim, in order to receive status. The remainder will form their own family groups, and that's the extent of it.
You'll notice that humans become more and more irrational in groups, even in groups as low as three or five. It's called "Mob Rule". In groups, human beings do things they would not normally do; and you can all relate to that. How many of us here have, of a nighttime after hanging out with the guys/gals, thought: "Geez. I acted like a tool today." Yet, at the time, you thought what you did was the best thing since sliced bread; and the odd thing was, that everyone else thought so, too.
One must assume that occurances such 'Toolish' behaviour increases respectively to the population. Therefore, countries with large amounts of people vs habitable land tend to have more 'crazy' people in it, as the competition for attention and rises up the 'pecking order' become harder won.

As for the people watching him, egging him on, and those who just logged off when he was clearly in trouble... My guess would be a case of "Genovese syndrome" (http://www.lihistory.com/8/hs818a.htm). Stupid idiots, but no stupider then the kid himself.

"Genovese Syndrome" is often attributed to some darker, shiftier part of the human psyche. Or it's blamed on the strange things city living does to that psyche. Or it's because of moral decay. Or anything else that talking heads come up with. So much so that it's become a Syndrome, capital-S.
Actually, when police interviewed the witnesses, it was established that every one of them had assumed that someone else had called the cops - someone must have the called the cops, right officer? - and that their testimony would be necessary to incriminate the criminal. They were also afraid for their own lives.
No dark motives. No moral decay. Just people making assumptions based on social reasoning.
Remember, in a group, people assume that someone else is already doing it, or will do it. Either you must be that someone, or you most pick people out and tell them to do it. FWIW Wolfspirit's behaviour in the car accident a few months ago is the kind of behaviour that will save lives - maybe even yours.

If i was in the irc chat I probably would have figured the guy was dropping sugar tablets or something and said stuff like

In fact if I was in a sour mood i probably would have egged him on thinking that it was all bullshit anyway.

Whats scary is thats how i talk in chat rooms and when people say stuff like that to me, it doesnt affect me. I dont know these people I dont understand how anyone feels the need to prove themselves to a bunch of faceless nicknames. And if the family wants to blame the irc maybe they should look back on themselves and wonder what sort of social deprivation thier son or brother has grown up with.

Personally i wouldnt have egged him on.
Even if i was pretty sure he was faking it, i wouldnt egg him on. theres always a remote possibility that hes not faking it, and if i found out he died, then fuck, id be ashamed.
its just sad that (aand like u sed spero), he felt the need to prove himself in front of faceless people on a chat program.

Like i mean ffs people i don't care who you are just grow up.. I think if i was in that chat room I'd proberly just stay out of it just basicly i feel kinda the same as spero, What do I care if i don't know the person. Its like reading the newspapers' funeral section and crying about the death of a person you don't know.. I might just be heartless but thats just me..
