The phone system here is a PBX system, I believe, and I'm trying to dial out from the phone socket using my computer (modem). However, only scrabble is heard through the modem's speakers, before it's even dialed; how can I dial out? It's sorta important.

First, make sure your PBX doesn't use digital lines, which it probably does. Because if it does you will probably blow up your modem.
Second, once you have established that you are using an analogue line, find out what number you need to dial to get an outside line and then configure your Dial Up Networking with that information - at the very least, assuming 0 gets you an outside line, prefix your phone number with 0, (zero comma)
