That's pretty f#cked up......My C Drive defrag took 3-4 hours but it wasn't anywhere near as fragmented as your's.

format wouldnt help. Unless he doesent want the files on that drive. Defrag the only way to go.

If it's NTFS it shouldn't really matter as much if it were a FAT32 type of filesystem. Although no point formatting just for that, just delete a few things and get defragging.

My partitioned drive has:
C: at 22% fragmentation
D: at 69 % fragmentation
E: at 87% fragmentation

Guess its time to defrag my D and E drives :)

what does it do?

It moves parts of broken up files closer to each other on the disk for faster reading. Basically speeds up searching and stuff on your hdd and also speeds up readtimes.
