the voxel/atom technology these guys are 'pioneering' has been in use in medical imaging for years - and animated there already.
Lightwave, a 3D modelling and anim package, has had hypervoxels animating in realtime since around 2000 I think. I'm not sure how this will work with MP, but does it matter? there's no reason why you cant continue to use polygons for the actors in a scene and just use voxels/atoms for the environment.
