A power failure in Darwin's northern suburbs is causing problems with Telstra's Casuarina exchange.
The system has been running on a back up generator for the past hour, but Telstra fears it could fail and warns that up to 40,000 Darwin customers may lose land line, mobile, data and ADSL services.
Telstra says it is doing "everything it can" to source another generator to keep services running.
Other areas that may be hit include Gapuwiyak, Alyangula, Nhulunbuy, Galiwinku, and Milingimbi.
PowerWater said it received notification at 7.15pm that there was an outage in Wanguri which affected about 25 customers.
Technicians were sent by 7.30pm and power was restored to residential customers.
But the Telstra exchange at Casuarina is still experiencing supply problems.
"We are assisting Telstra with back up facilities", spokeswoman Lorraine Hook said.
