I've been plagued by Minecraft crashing, "running out of memory", on my Win7 64 install for months. I finally decided to fix the problem by using 64-bit Java.
Calling "javaw.exe" instead of "java.exe" means the console will be hidden (preferred).
- Open Internet Explorer 64-bit.
- Go to Sun Java (java.com).
- It should auto detect your 64-bit browser and let you download 64-bit Java.
- Run the installer.
- Download minecraft.jar from the official Minecraft website (listed under linux/other).
- Right click on mincraft.jar and create a Windows shortcut to it.
- Edit that shortcut, and set the "Target" to "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp Minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame
Calling "javaw.exe" instead of "java.exe" means the console will be hidden (preferred).
