I would use the term when i created my first 2 characters on warhammer... I have no idea how the game works, how each class relys on others, let alone know every class. So I just did a random (ie roll) choice on a class.

I can see how it originated

why use the ****ing term 'roll' when there is nothing at all random about character creation? i wish i could find the ****er that started that and hurt him badly.

Same with term gank/ganking/ganked IT DOESN'T ****ING MEAN YOU KILLED A ****ING PLAYER 1ON1 IT MEANS YOU KILLED 1 ****ING PLAYER WITH 5 ****ING PLAYERS.

and the term roll i can understand with pen and paper RPG's you would actually roll die for your attributes and shit. still used out of context in mmo's i know
