Getting reamed by Intel

Intel's new processor code named Prescott (either will go under Pentium 4 or 5 name) will require a new motherboard. That's right anyone who has just bought a mobo, even the i875 then you'll have to fork out for a new one (just like Intel want's you to). It's possible a company like PowerLeap will make an adaptor, but they are expensive and may take time.
Also the fact that the BTX form factor will require you to get a new PSU and case and the upgrade is looking further away.
Did I mention that the first Prescott processor to be released will start at 100w :!:

The new boards are designed as sugested to put out the new cpu.

Intel presentations are cool u learn all the new stuff :)

Also known as Socket T.
The 2mb is L3 cache and is completely useless  It looks like they will use that for Socket 478 and Prescott for only Socket T (still meaning all thoses new mobos are usless).

Post 8

all it is, is a change in pin set .. so that means new mobos to support

Post 9

The same is true of Athlon 64/FX - which are already on sale, rather than being vapourchips.

I refuse to buy a processor that puts out 100W+ :!:

Post 13

well.... so u sure all presscotts need a new mobo?
i upgraded not logn ago, 2 weeks at longest and reading the manual of my msi 865pe neo2-s it says "The mainboard supports Intel Pentium 4 Northwood/Prescott processor in the 478 pin package."
direct qoute from the manual...

What happened is Intel said they were releasing the Prescott on Socket 478, then they ditched that and instead released the P4 Extreme (or something) with 2mb L3 cache.
This isn't new from Intel, they have agreements with companies to make their new products not compatible so they can sell more.

why does it matter if it is 20 times faster than anything else?

Post 16

1. Because my computer is both fast and silent.
2. The only thing they are twenty times faster than is a 386.
