my 2.67 cents: This forum should be unmoderated, i remeber way before GU people should have seen some of the stuff written in the flame-wars forum. Granting, people these day's do come up with some really insulting come backs but i still say it should be unmomderated. The moderation in these columns is a cross between Germany Late in 1930’s and early 1940’s, Russia in 1970’s and China in 1980’s, every time I say something I await for my family and I to be dragged away by some storm trooper squad or run down by a tank while we are peacefully trying to view our opinions in the Town square.
My fear for saying something is only over shadowed by the reactions inflected upon the rest of the forum community if I don’t try to act, the Jackboot slamming, knee jerk approach that has been inflicted upon them is as much of a war cry as the Cuban Missile crisis and your cry’s that this is not true are as unbelievable as the conspiracy theory surrounding JFK, Princess Dianna and Landing on the moon.

Dunno if you're suggesting knee-jerk reactions but sure as hell we could bring these forums back to the times you've mentioned by deleting users that protest (eg. meataxe) and deleting any thread that whinges. Perhaps sending a fully armed sponge doll to your place would be more to your liking to reminisce of times of abused power.
Actually now we've all had a week of fun with the flame wars back. I don't really understand what people are complaining about we're impeding on their freedom in some way? People should go make some other unmoderated forum their new home where they can post crap with glee.
Of course there's heaps I've learnt from movies. With great power comes great responsibility, hence we're making hard decisions for the masses. Then from my couple years in legal studies - the minorities whinge the most, the masses stay silent.
