I just run a mail rule in Outlook express to delete anything from the mail server that contains the word 'penis' or 'viaagra/viagra/viaaanngora/etc' in the subject or content. gets rid of 80% of spam

i read a thing in an old APC mag. they did a study on spam mail.
what they did was they made an email like johnsmith@hotmail.com and then they made one like qqufmtfjklsaee@hotmail.com. they didnt sign them up to anything, just left them for 24 hours... when they checked the emails, the regular words one had 50 or more emails and the one with the random letter had none.... im pretty sure they went on to say that spam senders have a thing where they type in a word and any email with that word in it gets their mail... im guessing it works for the _ thingys as well....

Mozilla Mail, or Mozilla Thunderbird.

Both of them include trainable spam filters.

Mine has been trained for about 4 weeks, and it's stopped producing false positives. It picks up about a third of spam. In a week I'll just set it automatically move anything it pegs as spam, and that'll cut down my inbox a lot.

Basically it's here to stay, I think. Make your peace with it and install a good spam filter.

i got sum spam from a @internode.on.au acc a day or do ago. that was kinda weird cause usually they from fucked up domains or random letters

Hey hobo, ur email address shows up publicly on your profile. Some spam companies use bots to search the web for email addresses, adds them to a mass list. Worse thing you can ever do is reply or try to unsubscribe, then they know they have an active account in their hands.

*realises this is flame wars* AHAHAHHAA j00 n00bz0r! g0t sp4m?!

Which one? Which version? Which OS?

Did you log the bug? If you've found a serious "show-stopper" the Mozilla QA team generally move heaven and earth to fix it.

I've made a new account the other day. I am keeping my Hotmail account, and anything I sign up for, I am using that account. I didn't really get a lot of spam though. I had my filter so anyone who wasn't in my address book just went to the junk mail. Even then I didn't get any spam really.

MSN is apparently upgrading Hotmail heaps (you's have probably all seen their ads - mostly flash or animations) so that looks good.

Internet's new spam: emoticons.
